MONDAY, MARCH 26, 1883.
And when on opening the -works of
a historian like Mncmilay, I find
him declaring that "If the Sunday
had not been observed as a day of
rest in England, there is not the
smallest doubt that ttc would be a
poorer people and a less civilized
people than we are;" when I hear a
political economist like Adam Smith
alnrming that "The Sabbath, as a
political institution, is of incstimablo
value;" when I find in the Commen
taries of Blaekstono the unqualified
declaration that "The profanatino of
the Sabbath is usually followed by
corruption of morals," and, finally,
when I look into the history of the
Sabbath, and learn that laws for its
observance, instead of being, as we
arc told, coincident with Puritan
bigotry, aie well nigh co-evil and
co-extensive with the Christian world,
then, aud only then shall I be in a
position to vote understandingly
either for or against the repeal of
the Sabbath law in the Common
wealth of California.
