A CLUB MAN'S FORTUNE.
"I am very much indebted to the
Times" said a young club man
yesterday to a reporter, "for the
2'lmes has made my fortune. I have
had just about enough spending
money for sovoral years to pay my
billiard and cigar bills, mid now I
am -perfectly independent. It is a
verycomfortablc feeling, too, to be
worth bomewherc in the neighbor
hood of $200,000."
The reporter, of couue, asked for
"Yon sec," said the young man,
" saw on article in the Times a
good while ajro showing how much
money a man might have when he
was old if he saved the money he
would otherwise spend for cigars
say, thirty cents a day. It figured
up to$10950 for the first year, and
kept on increasing very fast after
that, till, after sixty years of 'saving,
it amounted to more than $50,000
at compound1 interest. Well, I
.could discount that, becauso I
smoked moro than threc "cigars a
day,, and paid moro ten cents apiece
for them." I never smoked less than
five a day, and always paid twenty
cent apiece for them. That made a
dollar a.day. 1 thought it Avould
be a goo'dAplah 'to ''have something
to fall back on when I got old, so 1
just made up my mind to stop
smoking and be a riohmian. The
1st of January I thought would be a
good time to quit, and I set aside
this upper pockot in my vest to
hold my cijjar fund 1 a day, nnd
no nonsense. On Monday I stored
away the dollar, and didn't care to
smoke at all. , Tuesday, another
dollar, and still didn't care much
about it. On Wednesday in went
thnthird dollar. I wanted to smoke
a little on Wednesday, but I knew
1 was getting lich and resisted. On
Thuisilay 1 bugged the fouith dollar.
Well, on Tluusday night I sat down
to a quiet little game of poker and
the boys just about cleaned me out.
1 had just 81 left, and 1 didn't want
to draw a check because the Gov'nor
sometimes wants to know what
checks are for. Theie was a big
jack pot that had just been opened
jmd 1 wanted to sec whether 1 could
better a pair of nines. It took 85
to get in, and; I happened to think
of the H in iny cigar fund. I
thought I might as well boirow that,
and in slio went. Sure as you'ic
alive .tlioy dealt mo another nine
and a pair of fouis. 1 won the pot,
of .course, with 15 in it."
"Did you keep on playing':"' the
rcpoter asked him.
"The game was just breaking up,"
said the young man. "That 45
wasn't much use to me, and 1 con
cluded would' cither turn it into
a few hundred cr lose it entirely.
So I tackled baccarat. Well, to
make a long story short, I came out
of tho baccarat with over $tf,000. It
was all won with my four-dollar
cigar fund, you know, and now I
have tho call on that game, lor 1
can keep right on smoking and lot
my f 3,000 bo growing all tho tiuio.
Just figure it up for yourself,, She
doubles every tun years, sure as fate.
TJ.'ut's $0,000 in ton years, $12,000
in twenty years, ;J4,000 in 'thirty
years, $48,000 in forty years', $1)0,000
in nfty years and 102,000 in sixty
wars. That's nearly $200,000 at
ordinary compound interest. But
by judicious juvestouents I can inako
her double that, IP makes my head
awim to think of it, Vm f)PP Jlu
