A1 country ride.
To the loft lmiul is L'carl Kivor or
Pearl Loehs, as it is as frequently
culled. Yesl There It is, a calm,
clear, placid lagoon, whose whim
lnerihg blue waters lave the .shores
of the thousand islets, dotting its
surface with their varied iupcct of
hill and plain in miniature, like sum
mer stars besprinkled over the vault
Nothing can be more lovely than
the panorama now spread before us.
It greatly resembles that of the far
famed Bay of Naples on a small
scale. And while we woidd not ex
actly paraphrase the Italian saying,
" Sec Naples, and die." the feeling
of intense delight in the wonderful
loveliness of the scene leads one to
almost give expression to the same
Behind us rises the hill we have
passed over, to our right the valley
and the everlasting hills, before ns
the red road crossing the undulat
ing plains, to our left the sea and the
island-dotted lagoonf and beyond, the
cerulean blue of the distant Waianac
mountains. The sheen of the sun,
the fleecy clouds that Heck the sky,
the verdure of the bpring-timc feli
agc-and the lazy stillness of the air,
intoxicate the senses of the be
holder. Like Circe's wand every
thing combines to keep him motion
less1 and without wisli to move or do
anything else but drink in the gen
lly exhilarating draught of hasheesh
Having aroused ourselves from
the contemplation of the scene we
once more go forward along the
road and reach. Unburn. The bridge
over which wo pass is mauka of the
few houses that make up the village
of (his name, so that we look over
on it as we puss. Tt seems one mass
of verdure rice, bananas, mangoes,
ecu., vie with each other in luxuri
ance and variety of tint.
As the road sweeps round the
bend at the head of the lagoon we
pass other houses, and sec here and
there on the lagoon small boats and
tiny schooners engaged in the coast
ing trade, some in motion and
others at anchor. Many fish-ponds
arc here, and both in them and the
lagoon vast quantities of iish can be
obtained, but the rights to fish arc
all in possession of some one or
other person or party. The road
novy grows more undulating than be
fore. Up hill and down dale we go,
aud verc it not for the steepness of
the ascent and descent wo would not
notice them as more than slight de
pressions. All of them are water
courses, sonic permanent, others
flowing in the wet season. Here and
there, too, where the road crosses a
roekbed, indications of cupriferous
veins, arc found, but the proportion
of copper is so small that it would not
pay to work them.
(Trt bo Continued.)
Among the crowd watching the
seals at a zoological garden were a
newly-married couple on a bridal
tour. They gave all the rest of the
animals the go-by to observe the
seals in the stone basin and it was
a full hour before they grew weary.
(Jhilleil by the raw air, aud impatient
over the 'waiting, the husband said:
