AN UNSIGNED CHECK PASSES MANY
TELLERS.
The Washington Post, of Feb. 14
tells the story of n rcmnrknblc in
stance of the peculiar oversights that
occur in the business world, which"
came to Jight at the counter of the
.ciishrooin..in the. Treasury Depart
ment a tiny or two ago. home months
ago the disbursing ofllcer of the
United Stntes Geological Survey for
warded to one of the attaches of the
Survey in a distant territory a check
covering the, amount of salary duo
him. Upon 'the receipt of this check,
the party in whose favor.it.was drawn
indorsed it, and obtained the, cash
for it of the nearest post trader.
The check was used by the trader in
making his settlements, and slowly"
moved eastward. From Chicago it
was forwarded to New York, and in
course of exchange passed' through
"the clearing-house", and subsequently
it TraB sent to Messrs. Riggs & Co.,
of this cit' for collection, being
drawn upon the United States
Treasurer here.- In uts travels .the
check had passed through many
hands, and the indorsements on. the
back of it represented institutions
whose capital aggregated many
millions. x
When it was presented in the cash
room for pnyment, for the first time
in all its journeyings, it was dsi
.coyercd that the check had not been
signed by the disburs'.ngofflcer who
'drewifr -This-defect was4 remedied
as soon in the attention of that
official was called to it, and the
amount called for by the check paid
over to Riggs S: Co. The strange
feature of the matter is that such a
material defect as the lack of a
signature to a check should not have
been discovered by some one of the
j many banking exports through whoso
hands it passed.
Aristocrat, pauper, debtor : -Tho
aristocrat is supported by his ances
tors, .the pauper by his contempora
ries, and the debtor byvposterity.
