ALONE ON THE SEA. '
lknitird Gilfoy, a ntitivc of Buffa
lo, New York, left this port on Au
gust ID, 1882, for Australia, in a
dory eighteen feet Ions, six feet beam,
a depth.of two feet six inches, and a
register of two tons, with the inten
tion of crowing the Pacific alone.
The Pacific for Mich the little boat
wh called was covered, with the
exception of two hatches, one amid
ships and one aft. The fore part was
used for bloring of watercasks, while
the after pat-L wits reserved for a
kitchen, cabin and sleeping room.
No news was received from the ad
venturous Gilfoy until the arrival of
the barkenline Tropic Bird, from Ta
hiti, whoso captain reported that lie
had sighted the Pacific on November
lOlh. lie learned that the boat, af
ter a week of favorable weather, had
experienced twenty-nine days of
calms and head winds, which had dri
ven Gilfoy to fehoiteu his allowance,
but he subsequently met with good
winds. lie alsojstated that his prin
eipledU.coinfort was the thumping of
the sharks again&tr this boat. By the
aid of a Harpoon he succeeded, how
ever, in rendering tlieiu so shy that
by propping up his clothing at night
in thei place where he usually sat lie
was enabled to sleep comparatively
undisturbed. The captain of the
Tropic Bird gave him his correct
bearings and .some fruit. After his
meeting w ith this ship things began
to get worse with the lone seafarer.
On December Hth, while to the
south of the Friendly Islands, a sea
broke over the boat and capsized her.
"Wheu righted, after an hour's hard
labor, another heavy sea upset the
dory. He .succeeded in righting her,
when on December 19th, after he
had once more put his craft in ship
shape, ami was enjoying pleasant
weather, his boat was pierced by a
swordfish- On Christmas day he
found liimsclf near Hunter Island, a
barren rock-, with all his instruments
uiul nearly all his provisions gone.
He then tried to make for New Cale
donia, but the winds and weather
were against him, Mid on January
1-1 th, he ate the last of his meat.
Two tdays later he lost his rudder
and rigged up a makeshift, and had
to subsfsfc on whatever fish he caught
and birds he shot. After January
20tli, having eaten his last cooked
ieat'he sucked the barnacles that

the "nan Jhen btccred aimlessly on
the wild waste pf waters, knowing
nothing and caring le&ss. At the last
moment, when nearly all hope W
lost, he wis picked up by the Alfred
Vittery, on January UDth, ho being
then but 100 miles trom Sandy cape.
The vessel was hound for Mary
borough. Queensland. Gilfoy was
kindly cared for, hut the last news
received, reports linn as being ill
with typhoid fever, at Maryborough,
the result of exposure and hard
ships. , -
