COST OF THE CHANNEL TUNNEL.
Tliu inobalilc cost if si channel
tunnel lius always been si very oh-M-nic
iincstion, nml Sir Kdwnrd
AVaiklu lisis hitherto lieoii very silent
si)ont it. Yesterday lie felt himself
in ti position to jjlve borne HgttU's oil
this imitlettlnrly unpoitiint point,
lie is making si tunnel, somewhere
or oilier, through one of the hnulest
stratified locks lie knew. This coM,
'; iiynnl, nml that means .-oughly
'Gii,UU0 n mile. Tlie eliiiiinel tun
nel would be about tueiilj-four miles.
Instead, however, of taking tliu eost
at .00,000 u mile, let them assume
thsil it. would be L'100,000 si mile,
and that would represent si eoM, of
2, -1 00,000 for the tunnel under the
bua. That is his estimate of the cost
of the netual tunnel. Next, he be
lieved tie estimate of l'3.r0,000 for
the tunnel to connect the Chatham
smd Dover and the Southeastern
nulwsrys would not be exceeded.
Tuo entire cost of the work, there
fore, came to only .U!,U00,UUU.
With an origiual outlay of this
modest kind Sir Kdward iva, no
doubt, justified in describing the
project as likely to be one of the
most profitable' ever undertaken
if prolitablciicsb weiethe only thing
to be considered. But then in this
modest estimate nothing is included
for the cost of fortifications at the
English end of the tunnel, evciy
penny of which -should fall upon
those who have made them neccssaiy.

The red spot on Jupiter, which
has been much obseivcd during the
hist three ycsu.s, is now found to
hsivc nn accelerating proper motion,
sis if it were a vsist iloating island on
the face of the planet. It preserves
its shape smd magnitude, its dimen
sions being 29,(500 miles in leuglh
by 8,309 miles in breadth, and hsis
thus a visible area three or four times
as great as that of the earth. In the
Jlrst year of its sippearancc it had n
drift of 10,000 miles of longitude,
and in its second yesu- a drift of
30,000 miles in two years. A dif
ference of opinion pievails as to the
permanence of its color, which is a
light pink, &omc fancying that the
spot is fading while others have been
unable to detect any diminution.
Professor Hough, of Chicsigo, who
has been the closest observer of the
spot, declares for its invaiiability in
brightness, shape, and extent. Can
it be possible that no are witness
ing the birth of another moon? Hio
fessor Hough declares that it is not
a pait of the solid surface of .Jupiter.
Mr. Darwin, who champions the
earthly parentage of our own moon,
should direct his attention to this
matter. Melbourne Leader.
