A ROUND MEASURE FOR A SQUARE
Sonic years ago an engineer, now
prominent intlieoilleinl management
of one of our gi eat railroads, was
supci intending the construction of a
now road up country near Candarlau.
After supper one evening he strolled
into the bar of a couutry tavern,
where some twenty men wcro seated
and chatting. A regular knowing
Scotchman was expounding the re
markable strength of the arch, its
use and application in mechanics,
and illustrating his remarks by paw
ing a two gallon keg. "You have
no idea, said he, 'how strong the
nroh is if ye set tf right if yo know
how. Now there's mc egg notn
ing's got a prettier arch than the
egg, and if you set it right it's migh
ty strong. Why, I can set an egg
on this iloor in such a shape that yo
can't break it with this keg.' A
general murmur of sneering disbelief
ran around the room, but ho was
game. 'I said it, and 1 can do it,
and I'll bet the drinks for the crowd
on it.' Our engineer hated the
Scotch, and though a reserved man,
he could not permit a Scotchman to
bluff a whole party with such an
arrogant and preposterous statement,
so he quietly said, 'I will take the
bet.' An egg was brought in from
the kitchen, and handed to the o
rator. Ho took it, and stood it upon
the floor in the corner of the room.
Our engineer did not even attempt
to All a square corner with a round
measure, but paid for the drinks
and retired, sadder and wiser.
There is living in this country an
old Lady who has read through tho
Bible at least fifty times. She once
read it through in fifty hours, read
ing two hours each day for twenty
five days. As an unbeliever, she
began to read it through curiosity,
but had not finished leading it for
the third time before she became a
convert to its truths and doctrines.

A doctor is "called to attend the I
son of a business man. He writes a
prescription that the family hasten to
have filled. Ou the following day he
returns to see his patient, and finds
the family in tears. ' ' Alas 1 ' ' sighed
the mother, " I did not believe the
measles could kill my poor boy,"
"The measles!" exclaimed the
doctor; "he had the measles and
you didn't tell me!"
Deacon Jones is one of your self
poised men. While at his evening
devotions a gun was fired beneath
his window. The deacon jumped to
his feet like a jack-in-the-box. But
lie recovered his equanimity in an
instant, and quietly remarked, "I
don't know whether that fellow killed
his prey or not, but I know that he
spoiled mine" Boston Transcript.
