SATURDAY, JULY 21, 1883.
LONDON GOSSIP.
(IIY 1 I.AM'.UH.)
C-lU'iIn lor the Dally Itnllulln.l
Our Scotch neighbours having nl
musl come round from the Glasgow
llittik smash, cases of solid swlndliug
by' cut Yankees arc again seeing the
light of Heaven in that canny coun
try. A short time ago 1)00,000 acres
of h.nd were ieiortcd for sale in the
land of Thackeray's "Virginians."
Nile next thing wanted was a British
syndicate or u limited liability com
pany. The vendor was a gentleman
named "Flagg, Klagg, of Virginny,"
as Bret Halt might sny. "Modern
Athens" had a nibble at the tempt
ing bait, but it was deemed prudent
to despatch a hard-beaded lawyer to
have a look at the titles and to pros
pect the laud. Mr. Dallas journey
ed to South West Virginia, Lebanon
county, to ascertain if S00,()00 acres
of this property was actually there.
It did not surprise him n bit when lie
found it was not. The police reports
of the district recorded that the
title-deeds were "entirely false, and
fabricated to deceive." So there
was an end of that lot. Proceeding
to the next property scheduled at
Grundy, "the country-seat of Bucha
nan," it was found that the abstract
of titles was forged in the name of an
olllcial who had long since been
turned out of olllce, and that the
judge who attested it was as un
i known as the writer of Junius' let
ters. Then the Virginians said it
was what might have been expected
fioin the Northern "white trash."
Mr. Abram Sugsdam, mi agent, is
under arrest for this nice little job.
The projectors of the New Virginian
Land Company have "dropped" a
bit of coin, but nothing to what
would have been the ease had they
gone for it blindly Land of the
mountain and the Hood, beware !
The celebration of the birthday
of the gifted composer of lolanthe
was socially, scientifically, and
musically interesting. His recherche
dinner for twelve at Queen's Man
sions was graced by the presence of
of the Piineo of Wales, the Duke of
Edinburgh, the Lord Chamberlain,
the Marquis of Uaitington, the
Danish Minister, Messrs. Gilbert,
Burnand, &c; and thirty more
fiiends "came in" afterwards. After
dinner the guests were presented
with telephonic receivers in con
nection with the Savoy Theatre,
whither had gone (after church, 1
hope,) the flower of Mr. Doyly's
Caite's troupe. So perfect was the
communication that iirst the strains
of the National Anthem and after
wards all the chorus and some of
the part songs of lolanthe were
-heart! as well in Queen's Mansions
as in the theatre; and equally well
were heard, too, at the theatre the
r return messages ol thanks from the
. distinguished guests; but to this
day it has not been ascertained who
it was who whispeied the message
that the Lord Chamberlain hoped
that the dresses of all the performcis
were btrictly dc rlqueur on such a
solemn occasion. Of cour3e it was
not the host's fault, that his birth
day happened to fall on a Sunday
"I lovo the summer," said the
boarding-school girl when she eloped
with her aiilhnietiu teacher.
