Sham Fire Precautions. Alarmed
by recent awful calamities the
Russian Government issued an otlicial
circular requiring all theatres to bo
abundantly supplied with water dis
tributed according to a specified
plan. At the Alexandria Music Hall,
in St. Petersburg, all the conditions
were apparently fulfilled to the per
fect satisfaction of the authorities.
But one day the Chief of Police
decided to make a personal cxminn
tion. He turned a faucet, but no
water came; a second and a third
were equally dry, and, in a word, lie
found that of all the elaborate ap
pliances, pipes, jets, spouts, etc.,
not a single one was connected with
any reservoir whatever. Such a
barefaced sham was too much for
Russian patience, and the theater
was closed within a fortnight. 8.
"Dr. R. Angus Smith, F.R.S., read
before the Manchester Literary and
Philosophical Society "A Note ou
the, Development of Living Germs in
Water." The process employed
cannot be too generally known.
About 2 V per cent of gelatin well
heated in a little water is mixed with
the. water to be tested, and the mix
ture forms a transparent mas3. If.
any organisms arc developed they do
not fall to the bottom, but become
visible as spheres of activity, which
remain long and can be closely ob
served. It is suggested that photo
graphs of these globules may be ta
ken and become a visible report made
by nature when the water has active
organisms in it. Australasian.
