The J. D. Sprcckels, Friis, left San

The'scliooner Enterprise went ashore
at Coos Bay on 30th September.
The schooner J. C. Cousins stranded
on' Clatsop beach. Four of the crew
supposed to be lost.
The Atlantic steamer Canada has beeu
towed into St. John's. 'N.F., with a
broken shaft.
The Martha Davis will probably sail
from Hongkong for New York.
The steamer Planter, 10 days and 20
hours from San Francisco, arrived j'ester
day with 24,400 bricks, 220 sks of coal,
3,420 redwood posts, lOOjSks of feed, 30
bule of hay, and 'one hoisfing' engine.
She is 100 ft.long, 80 ft beam, 11 ft hold
and 400 tons register. She has a com
pound engine 10 high pressure, 88 low
pressure unci 21-inch stroke. The boiler
'is'lO1 ft' 'long ilnd 11 'ft diameter. Her
average speed is 12 knots per hour. 'The
hurricane deck, covers about two-thirds
of the vessel, with a low railing around
it, several fire buckets forward and a
step-ladder-, 'midships leading- to the
upper d'eck.' "Forward, "'on the 'upper
deck, js the wheel-house, captain and
chief olllcer's 1001ns, also a stair case
leading to the galley. Midships is the
freight deel; and baggage rooms; aft is
the purser's room and a iarge stair case
leadingrto, the cabin, a paiutingi of the
steamer hangs oyer the door. The cabin
is a spacious room, containing 12 berths
and four state rooms. Eacu room has
one berth, a lounge, chairs, toilet sets, etc.
A running -ourtain divides them from
the main room. Adjoining the cabin
are two toilet rooms and the pantry.
The lower deck has a jtidQ passage ori
each side- of the' cngirih 'room." The'
engine room is verj- linely fitted, with
the chief and assistant engineer's rooms
adjoining. She oafrles four double end
surf boats. She will run on tkclwalanl
route commanded by Capt', Bates and
Mr. Wierchicf officer. On, her voyage
here she stopped 24 hours for repairs.

The Oceanic Steamship Company
have issued small pamphlets containing
information as to the movements of
their steamers, passage money and ac
commodation. Oun remarks made'ih an editorial on
Friday have evidently hit home, and
the editor of the Saturday Press finds
that the cap fits. Perhaps it is an un
comfortable fit.
The Y. M. C. A. building was nearly
burned down on Saturday night through
one of" the qutside lamps exploding.

Visitors to Kilauea volcano have
been compelled recently to go down
to the crater from the Kan side, instead
of by the usual track from the volcano

Whitney was jumping on shore from the
Planter,.he struck his head against the
keel of one of the boats that was swing
ing in the davits, and fell backwards in
to the, water, being momentarily stun
ned. He is none the worse for his
ducking. '

At a meeting of the boy's reading

Mn. Stirling has reported favorably to
the Government on the repairs made to
the Honokaa landing, 'Hawaii,1 by
Messrs. Lawrence and Frceth. The

Some delay occurred in the work at the
Koholalele , landing, Paauilo, through
the crane gear'swinging on to the rocks
and breaking a spur wheel, which had
to bo replaced' from Honolulu. Tho
landing Is probably finished at the pre
sent time.
