THE ANNEXATION SCHEME.
No official notification has yet
been made of the instructions given
to High Commissioner Tripp and
AssistantHigh Commissioner Clarke,
during their cruise in the Julia. We
have however obtained information
which agrees with the statements
freely made by the Assistant High
Commissioner before his departure.
The Premier's annexation scheme
is progressing in theory, though,
hitherto, it has not succeeded in the
acquisition of any territory in the
Pacific. The Hazard brings news,
that had circulated speedily through
the coral lands, of the arrival of the
Julia at the Kings Mills group,
where High Commissioner Tripp had
"suggested" the advisability of
annexation to Hawaii, and was
lecturing upon the numerous advan
tages to be derived by the ' 'simple
and ignorant" in taking such' a
step. A few missionaries, overawed
- by the gorgeous uniforms, endorsed
the "suggested" sentiments of the
High Commissioner, but the "misera
ble savages and wild beasts of the
jungle" were not desirous of any
outside interfere!) ce, and referred
tho Hawaiian uninformed uniformed
officials to their Kiug. The result
of that interview had not been ascer
tained when the Hazard started on
her return voyage, but it was
thought probable that nothing further
would be seen of the Hawaiian
Premier's ambassadors, the King of
the Kings Mills being more of an
, autocrat than even our Foreign
Minister, and a man who, when dis
pleased, or interfered with in his
own country, simply orders "roast
pig" for supper. We hope that our
Commissioners will receive a kinder
&?. recention from tho "wild beasts of
the jungle," than was accorded to
Captain Cook by the "Gentle Hawa
iian." MORTUARY REPORT
