BETWEEN TWO STOOLS.
This is the uncnviablo position in
which the Promicr finds himself to
day. On the one Bide is Colonel
Claus Spreckela, and, on the other,
the PaciQc Mail Company and the
accredited agent of the State De
partment at Washington. The policy
of the Hawaiian Government has
evidoutly been closely followed in
Washington, and American policy,
shaped by the influence of the Pacific
Mail Company, is the undoubted
cause of the presence, in Honolulu,
of the American Commissioner. This
gentleman is not likely to suffer any
delay in his dealings with the Pre
mier, nor is he likely to be cajoled
by those mannerisms in which the
Premier is an adept, nor misled by
the persuasive eloquence of the glib
tongucd President of many Boards.
The action of the State Department
at Washington is most marked, and
His Majesty should not fail to notice
into what disrepute his chief adviser
is, -slowly, yet surely, dragging his
kingdom. The next move of the
1 ' Protoean Premier ' ' will be watched
with interest, as time is brief aud
the situation is dangerous. His of
ficial head depends upon the agility
that he displays in successfully ac
complishing the political feat of
clinging to both stools.
THE FARCE OF THE FORCE.
The recent address of the Honolu
lu police force to His Majesty, has
not received that attention or public
ity which it deserves. Twice they
have received "words of encourage
ment from HisR oyal lips." ''Such
honors" they "can never repay so
that the long and weary hours of
watch at day and by night have
become as naught, and sleep seems
to have vanished from our eyes."
What about the officer who is con
stantly in the arms of Morpheus
near the store of Messrs. C. Brewer
& Co., and the officer whose watch
was taken from him as he slumbered
on Fort street' Thoy have "been
seen in the house of God." Yet
one committed perjury. Great is their
rest at all times. " Happy be their
dreams, R. I. P. "The law breaker
has received due punishment," es
pecially the two members of the
force who recently assaulted a
German, and were lined S 10 each.
The farce concludes with a petition
to increase the force that each watch
may be "reduced to four hours,"
and asks for moie "words of en
couragement, to place them withiu
the innermost of their bosoms."

DR. HENRI G. McGREW.
The Medical Aye, a journal de
voted to the science of medicine and
surgery, published in Detroit, Mi
chigan, U. S. A., contains the
following complimentary notice of
the son of our old citizen Dr. J. S.
" We notice in a Honolulu paper
that Dr. Henri McGrew has been
appointed Surgeon of the S. S. City
of New York, of the Pacific Mail S.
S. line, and that he is on a trip to
Australia. Dr. McGrew graduated
from the Michigau College of Medi
cine of this city last spring and
returned to his home in the Hawaiian
Islands in July. The many friends
whom he made during his college
course will be pleased to hear of his
fortune, and none will have any
apprehensions touching his fitness
for the responsible position, notwith
standing the fact, which is alleged,
that he is the youngest surgeon ever
appointed by the P. M. S. S. line."
Dr. Henri McGrew is expected to
return to Honolulu on the Mariposa.
