CMSTIAS THE ATTORNEY-GENERAL. 1'ho appointment of Mr. Paul Neumann as Attorney-General was announced on Saturday. Tbe va cancy which has existed in the Cabi net for the Inst six months is now filled. It is only repeating what both the supporters and opponents of the Government know and admit, to say that it ought to have been filled long ago. A competent, re sponsible Attorney-General might have Baved the administration many serious mistakes and the consequent trouble arising therefrom. Had not the decisions of the Supreme Court Judges, in tho matters of the Gazette charter and the coinage, been ad verse to the Government, the ad in terim arrangement might still have coutinued for an indefinite period, to the injury of all concerned. It is well thnt a change has come at last, although too long delayed. With regard to the gentleman on whom tho appointment has been conferred, we hope that Mr. Neu mann will show himself an able and conscientious public officer, and ad vise fearlessly and independently, according to the law and the constitution. THE STORM Is the most severe that has occurred for ten years. The extent of the damage will not be ascertained for some days, though considerable damage has already occurred. A portion of His Majesty's boat house was washed away on Friday night, and, as tho building was so insecure, all its contents were removed aud a gang of carpenters engaged to endeavor to make it safe. The coal shed of Messrs. T. II. Davies & Co., was partly undermined and fell, and the earth at the back of the V. M. S. S. Co' s wharf has given way to a great extent and is insecure. The Mazathm was crushing her wooden fenders to splinters on Saturday, as .she was dashed against the dock. The Caibarien and the Mariposa were unable to sail ; the jetty at the Immigration depot was washed away, as was 200 feet of piping at Wai kiki. A quantity of sea weed was washed' on to the city front. King' street, near the Chinese theater, and the branch road to the jail were flooded, spars and lumber being washed on to the streets. Mr. Ames' shipyard was flooded, his scows being turned upside down. The barometer which fell as low ns 29.55, stood on Saturday morning at 29.60. A gentleman, who is well versed in the Houth Sea labor traffic and its difficulties, endorses our remarks as' to the charges of each laborer to the Fiji Government, ho having seen the published official report in tho Fiji Times. He also dwells upon the difficulties that will be experienced in obtaining a further supply of labor from this source, if men arc not immediately returned to their liomes at the expiration of their con tracts. The 'time for their return is always noted, and the promptness, of the Queensland aud Fiji Govern ments in sending the laborers home has had much to do with their success in obtaining men. Our informant says ' if the men are not returned on time, it will be almost useless attempting to obtain any more, as the news of their delay spreads rapidly from group to group." While on this subject we might ask, who is to bear the ex pense of returning the South Sea laborers, that have just arrived, under the anspices of the P. L. and S. Co., the clause in the contracts enforcing their return, by that com pany, having been omitted? LYDAN LIVES. In town. The reason is, because he has his store open every night and is selling his toys and Christmas cards at cost, intending to give up that line of business. He is so rushed by purchasers that he hasn't time to go to his country seat. You should see bis large family (of dolls), and how they play with the soldiers, and have tea parties. One room in his store is devoted to tho display of toyB, tho only trouble is that they are of too varied a description to choose from. Puzzles, cubes, tnar ' 'bles, the historical animals of Noah, horses, railways, drums, steamers, they are all going like ninepins. His Dew stock of furniture and fancy goods is not devoid of merit.
