LODGE, NO. 3, I. 0. 0. F.

was organized May 4, 187C, with a

ginning its success was assured. It
now numbers 85 xncmbets. The

place of meeting than any formerly
procurable. This desire is now rea
lized by the completion of the new

ventilutcd, and magnificently fitted
up, with a splendid ante-room and
other small rooms for the safe keep
ing of regalias, etc.

THE WOMAN OF THE PEOPLE.
The following, written by one of
the oldest clergymen in Australia, is
full of interest.
"The Rev. C. F. Garnscy, who lias
witnessed the pcrfonrinnco of "The
AVomnn of tho People, or the Hor
rors of Drink," at the Gaiety
Theatie, has addressed the following
note to Hcrr Bandmnnn: "Sir,
For many years past I have abstained
from the theatre from the feeling
that the ordinary plays picsentcd to
the public missed their object, as
expressed by our great dramatist
the immortal Shakspcarc whose
end, both at tho first and now, was,
and is, to hold, as tworc, the mirror
up to Nature) to bIiow virtue her
own feature, scorn her own image,
and the very age and body of the
time, its form and pressure. Rather
it seemed to me that the aim and in
tention of too many of the writers
for the stage was to pander to un
wholesome tastes and feelings, and
to present scenes at once gross,
sensational, and coirupt. Having
had an opportunity of witnessing the
performance of 'A Woman of the
People,' I have no hesitation what
ever in expressing my conviction
that it achieved, in a very marked
manner, the ' desired object I have
iudicatcd, and must influence many
who are able to see it for good. It is
a true picture of life, powerfully ex
citing the good impulses which the
Creator has implanted in bur breasts,
and holding up to scorn and detesta
tion that well-known character in the
world, 'the jolly good fellow,' who,
in his own absence of self-restraint,
becomes the ruin of others, and the
blight of many homes. It is free
from coarseness and vulgarity, while
it points most strongly to the one
moral, the evil of over-indulgence in
drink. Yours, &c, Chas. F. Garn-
sev, Unrist Uuurcu, byuney, July
31."
