CHINESE SECRET SOCIETIES.
The little Principality of Sarawak
is located on the Western coast of
the island of Borneo. It was founded
in 1848 by Sir James Brooke. Its
present Ruler is Rajah Brooke,
nephew of the founder. Sarawak
has an area of about 40,000 .shjWc
miles, with a coast-line of 330 miles
in length, and its population, like that
of Hawaii nei, is considerably mixed,
being composed of natives, Euro
peans, Chinese and other Asiatics.
The government of Sarawak is an
absolute monarchy. Rajah Brooke
is Sovereign, assisted by a Council
of six, composed of the two chief
European residents andfour natives.
In addition to this Supreme Council
theie ib a General Council of about
fifty, in which the leading European
and native residents of the vaiipus
districts have seats. The General
Council meets once every three years,
or oftener if required. For admi
nistrative purposes the principality
is divided into eight districts. Sara
wak has a standing army of 250 men,
or one soldier to each thousand of
the population. The navy consists
of seven small steam-vessels, the
largest of which is 200 tons. The
police force is comprised of 50 men.
There is no public debt : the revenue
mote than meets' the expenditure,
leaving a balance available for public
utility. The annual impoils and ex
ports of the country amount to 85,
000,000, and arc steadily increasing.
Coal and other minerals exist, but
the inhabitants rely principally upon
the productions of the fields and for
ests : they produce sago, pepper and
gambia in great abundance, and arc
hopefully experimenting with qui
nine, coffee and tea. Like ourselves,
Sarawak appears to be gicatly in
want of population, which is being
supplied by immigration from China
and other countries.
The foregoing particulars have
been culled from a somewhat lengthy
article, written by the piesent Rajah
Brooke, for the Pall Mull Gazette,
and arc here reproduced with the
belief that they will be of interest
to our readeis. The Rajah's ob
servations concerning tho Chinese
we consider of sufficient importance
to this country to give more at length,
and in his own words: ho sayc,
"Chinamen arc the basis of al',the
jirosperity in Borneo: without China
men wc can do nothing.' 'I'lioy
bring capital, labor, and icvenue,
Tli'ey aro very easily governed, when
ithey aro ,not allowed to'fdr$rac'flvet
societies. It was a Chinese secret
society which burned ray uncle's
"'" h"JF
bungalow over, his head and almost
lc8"Moyccl the t colony. Wo aimed
tho Dyaks, hunted down the Chinese,
re-cstnhliahed his r tuituoi ity, nnd
made jit death to any Chtnamen
oftcrwmds to belong to a secret so
ciety. The law is still in force, and
it is tho only safety in dealing with
Chinese. "When once one secret so
ciety is established, others .are es
tablished in self-defence. The whole
uiiehlncriy1 of murdov is sec' on foot,
repi isnlfl become tho order of the
dny, and no good can bo done until
the scfict syptcin. is looted out.'
In view of the" fact liat a Chiliese
secret society oxists in Honolulu,
our authorities may do well to take
timely warning by , tho words of
Itnjnlt Brooke.
