TUESDAX, JAN. lf, 1884.
A HISTORIC TREE.
A responsibility of which Mr.,
Gladstone onco little dreamed mid
which mny yet cnusc sonic disquie
tude to him mid sonic of his most
Protestant colleagues has devolved
upon ,this country as the protectors
of modern Kgypt. There exists, as
some people arc not yet aware, in the
district, of Mattarich, in Lower
'Kgypt,, n tVcc Under which the Holy
Family is supposed to have taken
shelter at the time of the flight into
. Egypt. As long ago as at the open
ing, jpf the Suez Canal, when tho
Empress Eugenic was present at its
inauguration, the then Khcdivo,
whose religion did not impress him
with as much veficration for this
objectof pious interest as was felt in
"it by his august visitor, gallantly
made u present of it to her Majesty,
and tbc, Empress shortly afterwards
t caused it to be surrounded with a
fine railing. Quite lately the relic
has beciV purchased, together with
the land on which it and its railing
stands, by tbc Society of Jesus,
which, as it is said, contemplates
erecting on the" spot a handsome
sanctuary or chapel in honor of the
Holy Virgin. But in order to carry
out this scheme the aid of some Gov
ernment other than that of a Mus
sulman ruler seems to be required ;
and the Patrie, after describing the
circumstances of the case, expressed
a hope that, " thanks to the British
Government, now become master of
Egypt," this pious work will shortly
be commenced. But whether such
a scheme, initiated and advocated by
the Jesuit-purchasers, will commend
itself to her Majesty's Ministers, is
a question about which the French
paper is, perhaps, a little too con
fident. London Globe.
" Do you ever gamble" she asked, as
they sat together, her liuntl held iu his.
He replied: "No; hut if I wanted to
now would In; my time." " How so."
"Because I hold a beautiful hand." The
engagement is announced. Excfiatiffc.
