' WEDNESDAY, (JAN. 23, 1884.
SWEET-MINDED WOMEN.
So great is the influence of nswect
miiulcd woman on tliosc nrouml her
that it is almost boundless. It is to
her that friends come in season of
sorrow and sickness for help and
comfoit. One soothing touch of
her kindly hands woiks wonders in
the feverish child ; si few words let
fall from her lips in the ear of a
sorrowful sister do much to raise the
load of grief that is bowing its vic
tim clown to the dust in anguish.
The husband comes home worn out
with the pressmc of business and
feeling irritable with the world in
general; but when he enters the
cosy sitting-room and sees the blaze
of the bright fire and meets his wife's
smiling face, he succumbs in a
moment to the soothing influences,
which act as the balm of Gilcad to
his wounded spirit. We all aro
wearied with combating with the
stem realities of life. The rough
schoolboy flies in a rage from the
taunts of his companions to find
solace in his mother's smile; the
little one, full of grief with its own
large trouble, finds a haven of rest
on its mother's breast ; and so one
might go on with instances of the
influences that a swect-minded
woman has in the social life with
which she is connected. Beauty is
an insignificant power when com
pared with hers. Am. Paper.
INFLUENCE OF FEMALE SOCIETY.
Tt is better for you, says Thack
aray, to pass an evening once or
twice iu a lady's drawing-room, even
though the conversation is slow, and
you know the girl's song by heart,
than in a club, tavern, or the pit of
a theatre. All amusements of youth
to which virtuous women arc not
admitted, rely on it, arc deleterious
to their uatui c. All men who avoid
female society have dull perceptions
and stupid, or have jjross tastes, and
reyolt against what is pure. Your
club swaggerers, who are sucking
the butts of billard cues all night,
call female society insipid. Poetry
is insipid to a yokel ; beauty has no
charms for a blind man ; music docs
not please a poor beast who does not
know one tune from another ; and as
a true epicure is hardly ever tired of
watcr-souchy and brown bread and
butter, I protest I can sit for a whole
uight talking to a well-regulated,
kindly woman, about her girl com
ing out, or her boy at Eton, and
liking the evening's entertainment.
One of the great benefits a man may
derive from women's society is, that
he is bound to be respectful to them.
The habit is of great good to your
moral man, depend upon it. Our
education makes us the most emi
nently selfish men in the world. "We
fight for ourselves, we push for our
selves, we yarn for ourselves, wo
light our pipes and say we won't go
out. "We prefer ourselves and our
ease ; and the greatest good that
comes to a man from a woman's
society is, that he has to think of
somebody besides himself, somebody
to whom he is bound to be constant
ly attentive and respectful.
