THE Y. M. C. A.
The regular month!- meeting was
held on Thursday evening, His IIo-
nor Mr. Justice Judd, President of
the association, being in the chniv.
The Trcasiucr reported a balanco
of $5.82, with bills outstanding to
the amount of 145. The building
committee made their final report,
and paid over, to'thc general fund
a balance of 205.57, which leaves a'
balance in hand for the association,
after paying all their debts, of $126.
The building committee received a
hearty vote of thanks and was dis
charged. It was decided to relinquish the
public preaching at the Sunday
afternoon services, in consequence
of the inability of Mr. Cruzan to
prepare tlnce sermons for every
Sunday, and to hold a prayer meet
ing only at half past three, Dr. Hyde
to be responsible for the next four
Sundays.
Roy. Dr. Hyde was appointed Edi
tor of the Y. M. C. A. "page of the
Friend, for the ensuing year.
The temperance committee, re
ported that a petition had been pre
sented to His Majesty asking for
wise legislation in the liquor law,
and that the facilities for drink
might not bo iucreased. Thoy had
not nsked him to veto all laws or for
prohibition, but had asked that it
might bo more diflleult for a man to
get drink.
The President spoke of one can
didate, who had vptcd for tho pre
sent liquor law, who now told his
native constituents that he would
advocate its repeal. IIo snid there
must bo some legislation on tho "sub
jeet as the present law Avotild ex--piic
nt the, end of the year.
Dr. Hyde repotted that the Chi
nese work had been progressing
quietly, but that there had been
some difliculty in obtaining the sala
ry of the Kohala Minister, lie had
seen two ladies, passengers by the
Cily of Rio do Janicro, who were
returning to China after their woik
in America.
Dr. Damon said Ihjo Cliincso ques
tion was a most serious subject for
consideration. The pcoplo did not
realize that there wcic from 15,000
to 20,000 heathens in the Kingdom,
and they must have funds to make
them Christians. It oould not be
expected that heathens themselves
would get the funds. It was n pro
found wonder Hint, instead of an
occasional rcpoit of an outrage, wo
were not overrun with outrages.
Why would not the government do a
tithe, to bring Chinese women here,
of what they had done for tho Por
tuguese. The planters did not want
them. He did not believe, that in
ten years, any department would
show such honest results, for the lit
tle money expended, as their Chi
nese department. It was one of
the crowning works that they had
prosecuted.
The Secretary read a letter from
Mr. McCoy to the effect that Cap
tain Bray had found, in Boston, a
gentleman whom he considered sui
table for the position of general sec
retary. The gentleman was assis
tant pastor in a Boston church and
had a bible class of more than 200
people. The Secretary said that the
letter had been referred to Mr.
Morse, in whose hands the selection
of a Secretary had been left.
Mr. Jones thought that they ought
to get their members first to pledge
themselves for the salary, because,'
iif a man did not turn out to be the
'right man, people would not contri-
)
bute
The classes in book-keeping and
Hawaiian were reported to be pro
gressing' favorably. The drawing
class had to be suspended in conse
quence of the absence of Mr. Furn
eaux. It was resolved that the furnish
ing committee be instructed to fur
nish the new room.
Dr. Damon suggested that a book
case bo procured in which to keep
any books or magazines that might
be given to them.
The meeting' closed with pniyer.
