' OUR FORESTS.
The last Legislature appropriated
eight
thousand dollars in aid of
forests. This was a wise appropria
tion, and we do not hesitate to sa3'
that it has bpen, or is being, wisely
expended. If the amount had been
made considerably greater, even at
the expense of some other items of
questionable public benefit, it would
have been better for the country.
Those who do not admit this to-day
may make the concession a year or
two hence. To preserve the forests
we have, is an important matter.
This is too universally acknowledged
by intelligent people to need argu
ment. To extend their area is also
important, which is equally palpable
.to observant persons. The appro
priation just referred to has mater
ially assisted these two objects the
preservation and extension of our
forests. Of course, a larger sum
would have produced correspond
ingly larger results. Precisely how
much has been accomplished we are
not in a position to say, but believe
a full and complete report will be
prepared shortly for the next Legis
lature, which will enable the public
to judge if we arc not conect in
stating that the money has been
v wisely expended, and the verdict will
undoubtedly accord with this state
ment. Mr Jaegor was intrusted with the
disposal of the small sum appro
printed. A more judicious choice
could not have been made. He ac
cepted the responsibilit' and has
prosecuted the undertaking with in
telligence, enthusiasm and industry,
gratuitously giving considerable time
and study to the matter. The seeds
and plants of many vnluablo trees,
indiginous to these islands, that
were disappeniing and likely to be
come extinct, have been collected,
nnd are being re-propoguted. In
numerable varieties of forest trees,
ns well as fruit producing' trees,
which will probably thrive in our
soil and climate, have been intro
duced from Australia and other
countries. The seeds are first ger
minated in the nursery,' at Pawns,

mountain sides. Besides, public in
stitutions and private individuals,
who so desire, arc supplied with
plants, free of cost. This work has
been, and is now being, done quietly
and unostentatiously, but none the
less intelligently and effectively;
and wo predict that the future, oven
more clearly than the present, will
demonstrate its incalculable worth
to lite country.
"STAND BY ONE ANOTHER."
It is always agreeable to nolo our
success but recently this has not
been unmixed with pain. By the
last mail from the Coast two letters
were received from strangers asking
for information. One is from a car
penter who, after enquiring as to
business prospects and "a steady
run of business," asks "how is board
and lodgings rates," "I presume
climate to be favourablcs." The
other correspondent is a lady who
encloses four cents in American
stamps. The postage is five cents
and the stamps arc useless, but no
matter. Our fair friend says "my
husband (we're sorry she has one)
and myself arc anxious to learn as
much of your city as it is possible
to do previous to a visit to it ; con
sequently we dcsiic to sec your pa
per (you do us proyd Madam).
"Will you send along with it
any information concerning manners
(there arc none) customs (Mr. Hen
dry please supply) expense of living
(innumerable) business openings
(plenty, if you have money to lose,
try a hash house) etc, etc. AVe will
be under many obligations to you
and possibly ma' have it in our
power to oblige you some day."
(She can "oblige" us at once with a
loan).
In our dilemma we can think of
but one person who can help us, for
we "must stand by one another,"
and that person is the Premier, who
has no equal in giving graphic des
criptions. We therefore appeal to
him to describe "the manners, tho
customs, the expense of living, busi
ness openings and the etc, etc.,"
which doubtless includes political
matters. AVe will ask the editors of
our weekly contemporaries to care
fully revise all information supplied
on the "etc, etc," so that both sides
may be fairly represented. Wc send
a copy of this issue to Madam and
the carpenters and recommend them
to try Joe Wiseman, who runs the
labor agency business.

MORE VENTILATION.
Editor Bulletin : During last
week I attended the ovening lectures
of the Rev. Father Bouchard, in the
Roman Catholic Church, and was
much intcicstcd and instructed ; but
one thing militated against my com
fort as a listener and apparently
against the comfort of the audience
in general, and it is for the purpose
of bringing to the notice of those
concerned the one thing referred to,
with the hope of its removal in
future, that T trouble you on this
occasion.. Insufficiency of ventila
tion is the thing complained of. The
evenings were mostly cool, but the
audiences were large, and so many
pcrsous breathing in the one room
with so few openings for tho admis
sion of fresh air, soon made the
church disagreeably warm. I noticed
that the windows, at least those
down stairs, were kept closed, nnd
hence the uncomfortable warmth.
Now, I think if those windows had
been opened, or partinlly opened,
there would have been n sufficiency
of fresh air, and the large 'ind atten
tive audiences would have profited
still more largely than they did by
tho able discourses of the Reverend
Lecturer. I have no motive in men
tioning this matter other than a
desiro for the welfare of the church.
