MONDAY, JAN. S8, 1884.
In November Inst Superintendent
Burton of the Mint, lcprcscnling the
United States Government, entered
into a. contract with Sir Claus
Sprcckcls for the eoitingc of 1,000,
000 of the denominations of qumtcrs,
halves and dolluis for the Hawaiian
kingdom. The terms of this conti act
provided that the Govcinmcnt should
receive 17,500 for performing the
work and that the entire amount
should be struck off within six
months after the date of the instru
ment. The dies, which coat about
88000, were furnished by the Anglo
Californian Bank, which institution,
as agent of Sir Claus, has pro ided
the bunion which has been used for
the coins. Up to date $300,000 in
halves and 125,000 in quuucrs have
been si -rick off and dclivcicd to the
bank, and that amount ha been
duly shipped to Honolulu. Of the
575,000 remaining to be coined
$500,000 will be in dol'nxs and the
remainder in eighths or tenths. The
last ofj the bul"on fiirnishcd by the
bank was used on the 31st of Decem
ber, and since that t'mc no fi thcr
silver has been sent to the Mint.
This is no doubt owing to the fact
that a number of business men in
Honolulu have taken legal steps to
to prevent the issuance of bonds to
the amount of $1,000,000, bearing
interest at the rate of 8 per cent per
annum, to Sir Glaus Sprcckels to in
demnify him for the 1,000,000 in
silver coin which he contracted to
furnish the Government. The Sat
urday Iress of December 27th
(published at Honolulu) has the fol
lowing item :
'By the Alameda another lot of
Hawaiian silver coin was lcceivcd,
amounting to $170,000, making the
stock in the treasury $300,000, which
as yet lies idle awating probably the
decison of the f uU Bench upon the
mandamus case, or upon what law
the Cabinet can base thqir action for
its issue. So far we fail to fiud any.
A Chronicle rcpoitcr visited a
number of gentlemen who have busi
ness with the islands, yesterday, and
among the number was one who evi
dently was fami'iar with all the facts
in the case. He said: "Yes, I have
heard all about the trouble. It ap
pears that the Hawaiian Government
and Sir Claus made an agreement by
which the knight was to furnish $1,
000,000 in s'lver coin of the intrinsic
value of our quarters, halves and
dollars. For this sci Ice he was to
receive $1,000,000 in bonds, which
would bear interest at the rate of 8
per cent per annum. Tins is what
the people find fault with. They
very justly protest against paying
$80,000 a year interest for
coins which they could
get along cry well without. But
th's is not aU. The $1,000,000 in
coin is actually woillr but $850,000
that is, the vaHie of the bu"ion
used only amounts to that figure.
Of course this is a very nice specula
tion for Sir Claus, but you can't
blame the people for kicking. I don't
thirk itwi'l do them any good, how-
ever, as I expect you know Sir Claris
lias everything his own way down
there. Ex-Senator Paul Neumann
has chaige of the case on the part of
the Crown, which means Si" Claus,
and there is no doubt in my mind
but that the bonds w'" be issued.
Most financiers would not care to
invest in Hawaiian bonds, but there
isn't any danger that Siv Claus, will
get left on the transaction. S. F.
