ports that on December 10, in Jmt. 19.21

by a hurricane, which blew every sail
out of the gaskets, stove' in tho-bulwarks
in several places, smashed the small
boat, stove in the forecastle and pilot
house, and washed ovciboard the chief
oilicer and a sailor. The mate, in going
through a hole in the bulwarks forward,
caught a rope midships, and was hauled
. on board. The sailor drifted astern,
but caught a line just in time to save
hislifo, for, had he missed it, they would
have been unable to save him, as a very
heavy sea was running, he was hauled
on deck almost insensible. The gale
lasted 21 hours, and required continual
pumping to keep the vessel alloat.
