WEDNESDAY, I'KU.'g. 1881.
Common sense niul close oWr
vnllon, if properly npplied, will raise
a tree to any desired form. If n
heed is planted whore it is to grow
and make n matured lice, it will re
quire but little attention, exeept cul
tivation, to make a handsome one ;
but if a bud is inserted, and at the
end of the first year, the whole top is
cut off, llicieby forcing all the sap
from the roots that are a year old or
more into the one bud, 'the conse
quent result will be so rapid a growth
that the knife must be applied fre
quently all through the growing
season that the top shall not shoot up
and become loo heavy for the body
Jo support and bland up stiaight.
The bodv Of the vntlllir budded lira
is the main point to be attended to
.. - -i i . . .
"" MMunu years, anil, lo Keep it
proportionately strong with the top,
the only remedy is to hold the sap
back by pinning off the top all
through the growing reason sulll
ciently to keep it in proportion with
the body. When a fruit lice is two
or three years old, and say seven
feet up from the ground ; or if there
is not a sudieient number, a bud
should be selected two feet below
tiic head and a knife set in low on
the back side of it ; then cut slant
ingly up and off at the top of the
bud, which will soon grow, and make
up the upright lioot for the new
head; and the buds immediately
below will make branches say from
three to five. There arc very' many
trees bought out of nurseries that are
set in their place and staked up,
which is entirely wrong. If they
cannot stand up stiaight, cut oif the
top. Jt is decidedly the best you can
do. and is cxactlv what. should 1
done, as the roots of your tree lias m
nearly been cut off in being taken up
that there cannot be much more sap
the first year than what the body will
require. If there should be any to
spare, it will send out a new lop that
can be supported without slakes.
In buying fruit trees, those with
the (lornicnt bud should always be
preferred, as you get liner and better
roots than are ever found on large
trees offered for sale ; and the dor
mant bud, after being set where it
has to stand, has no check ever after
wards, and will grow and make a
belter tree and much quicker -than if
the nurseryman had kept it another
year or two. On trees that do not
bear much fruit the bark should be
cut into the wood at the lower bran
ches, extending the cut down to the
ground on three sides at nearly equal
distances apart. This should be
done in the spring season as soon as
the sail conies up. Calislofiau.
