iMSS fv PECULIARITIES OF SHOP GIRLS. A compact and energetic little woman, with neatly brushed hair, high color, and an .exceedingly business-like manne, was bustling' down the iloor of a great New York dry goods store, when the spectacle of a solitary man among several hundred in different women attracted her attention. The man couldn,t endure the situation much longer. He had been stared at, jostled, jeered, and snubbed until he felt round shouldered and hollow-eyed. ""What can I do for you, sir'?" asked the compact little woman, in an agceable voice, "Oh, I came in search of information.''' "Have you found itV" "Na, I can't say that, I have. I wanted to make some inquiries about the relative merits of foreign and domes tic shop-girls. I asked two of the many young women here. One told me that the intelli gence office was in the base ment, behind the elevator shaft, and the other that the best time for a casual conver sation was Monday after G P. M." "You made the mistake, of approaching pretty girls. Men always do that, and they usu ally do it with a smile that gives the pretty girl an oppor tunity. Plain girls are always civil with me. It is a habit they acquire early." "I know all about shop girls," continued the little woman, resting a plump hand on one hip, while she tapped her teeth thoughtfully with a long pencil which she snatch ed from her back hair, where it had stuck out like the head dress of a Fiji Islander. "I have been with them all my life. I am one now, only 'm no longer V!1I hnf r have three of niv own. I'm a'1' superintendent of them here, and Ifind them easy to manage. One must never be the least bit familiar with the girls, or ' they will become immanae able." "A great many of them have been in better circum stances, have they,no(. V" "That is a very common impression, but one that hasn't the smallest founda tion, in my opinion. The girls are fond of giving people that idea. In point of fact, how ever, they are almost all of them the most pretentious and ambitious members of their families, and miles above their f parents m the social scale. When a woman of position meets with misfortune she re solutely avoids the shop. She will do anything rather v' come to an establishment-'iji. this. She takes in Sfj,u,;1)0. gives painting or mu! ""There is no comparison - JTwhaUsver," said the little Jiiiighsh-woman, with a de w cisive shake of her head. "The American girls are superior in every respect intelligence, tastes, neatness, quickness and courtesy. It may strike you that there is doubt about the last, but I am right. The London shop girls are insolent, while here they are only saucy or im pertinent, if they offend at all. There is a vast difference. London girls are so stupid, you know." "Are there many complaints about the girls V" , "Oh, yes; quite a number. We observe, however, that the complaints always come from shoppers who are not ladies. A well-bred woman Avill not find a disagreeable shop-girl in a long pilgrim age in "New York:. If the girls are bothered with ques tions which no one has a right to ask, they are very apt to be pert." With this the little woman nodded brightly, thrust the pencil into her back hair again, and bustled cheerily away. Washington Slur. "A WORD TO THE WISE IS SUFFICIENT" (5. F. AVtw Letter.) The impoliteness and fami liarity of someyoungmen who pass current as "gentlemen," is somewhat amazing to me, and that they should be en dured by well-bred people is still more astonishing. 1 was taught in a very liberal school, and yet the old maxim, should be taught to these fresh young men (T cannot call them gentlemen) for the free and easy way in which they address ' and treat young ladies is un bearable. I call to mind an instance illustrating the total absence of good breeding and manners on the part of the young men above referred to. One evening while calling on two young ladies, one of these men came in, and after a few moments passed in general conversation, I arose to say good evening. I was then asked by this person if I was going down town. Upon my answering in the affir mative he offered to join me, which offer I accepted. Allow me to say in parenthesis that this fellow was only slightly acquainted with the young ladies in a social way He had danced with them at parties, and had called on inem at tneir lather's resi dence. Kow, as we were departing, while standing in the hallway conversing, he addressed the following re mark to the young ladies: " Are you girls going to Mrs. J's to-morroAV evening?" The ladies colored up a little and looked slightly oltended, but said nothing. As for me I was naturally so surprised that I stared at the man in utter amazement. Another instance, in which the same man exhibited his ignorance and boqrishncss, took place last Sunnner at a gentleman's house in the country, where a small party of young ladies and gentle men were visithur. We were all sitting in the billiard-room conversing, gentlemen and tlpc younpi were iEfrtTifam? lM.',r. 1. 11, i """a- ui j-i u&ii youin alluded to nadthe audacity to put the lighted endof his cigarette close totfe wrist of the lady of tjjfjr house. This time I Tvas simply dumbfounded. Tf this lady had been my wife or sister talcing it for granted, of course, that he were not my guest would have made a few remarks to this young man that would have made an everlasting impression upon his memory, and caused him to be more discreet in his conduct in the future. The man above alluded to is only one of a class in this city whose manners are equally objectionable, The habit these men have of addressing or speaking of young ladies in their first names is not merely disgustingly vulgar, but also positively insulting. In conclusion I wish to suggest to these fresh young men the propriety of mending their manners and checking their effusive vulgarity; and as a remedial measure for the evil to which I alluded, I would suggest that all gen- leei l amines should drop from the list of their acquaintances men who bring into the drawing-room the manners of the casino or melodeon.
