gentleman who has just re
turned from (he Sandwich
Islands said to the writer:
"Before leaving Honolulu 1
had an interesting chat with
Dr. Arning upon the subject
of leprosy, and went with
him through the investigating
leper hospital of Kalcaalco.
Arning came to Honolulu in
the early part of November
last, for the purpose of study
ing the peculiarities of, and
of possibly discovering a
remedy for, the terrible
ravages of that foul disease.
He is a pupil of the celebrated
Dr. Virchow, and has already
established for himself such
a high reputation as a medical
microscopist that he has been
" sent from Berlin to study the
leprosy question, his expenses
being paid out of the Hum
boldt Fund for Philosophic
Research. He speaks in
pleasant terms of the evident
desire of the Hawaiian Gov
ernment to further his effort
in every possible way, and
of the energetic measures
that have lately been institu
ted in the Tslands for the
suppression of the disease.
Official actLn is greatly
hampered' he says, by the
singular apathy of the natives
regarding the spread of lep
rosy, and the general conniv
ance in the concealment of
anyone -who has been stricken
with the malady. It is difficult
to understand the reasoning of
the uneducated native brain
on this subject, but the fact
remains that they in no man
ner appear to avoid the pos
sible danger of contagions,
and throw every obstacle in
the way of police supervision.
He is sure that this Avill be
changed in time, and is also
confident that the Government
will persistently enforce and
improve upon the laws for
segregating the diseased from
the healthy until they have
become thoroughly effective,
as he claims that
HIS INVESTIGATIONS
Up to the present time have
been of a more or less bene
ficial character. Dr. Arning
is unwilling- to express anv
"opinions for publication upon
the mysterious' complaint in
question, and therefore I do
feel at liberty to repeat the
surmises that he expressed to
me ; out 1 can say that he is
inclined to believe in the fact,
of contagion under certain
circumstances, while he by no
means regards leprosy as
being very actively conta
gious. Among the patients
sent to Kakaako for; exami
nation there are numerous
cases of eczema and similar
skin disorders that have some
-' outward resemblance to lep
rosy, and these are, of course,
allowed to leave as soon as
medical judgment has been
passed upon them, while the
clearly pronounced cases of
leprosy, are forwarded to the
- leper settlement at Molokai.
In the present dim light of
knowledge upon the subject
Arning is confident that" the
first remedy applied must be
absolute segregation, as there
has been no. specific as yet
discovered for its cure. All
that can be done is to lessen
the painful horrors of the
disease by subjecting the
-patient to hygienic rules and
by supplying him with a nour
ishing diet. The unfortu
nates are almost invariably
drawn from among the ill-fed
and uncleanly classes, where
the vital powers have become
too weak to resist the en
croachment of disease. "When
the true bacillus) or germ,
has been once discovered,
there will be every reason to
hope for a subsequent dis
covery of a successful system
of treatment ; but, Up to the
present time he has found no
satisfactory evidence of a
permanent cure, although
there are repeated instances
of Avhat is called arrested
leprosy. In these latter cases
there is a temporary healing
and a probable protraction of
life, but an eventually fatal
result is inevitable.
SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH.
Arning is very much in
earnest, is a decidedly intelli
gent man, and presumably
a scientific one," continued
the speaker, "and Hook for
Avard with great interest to
the outcome of his investiga
tion. "When one considers
the prevalence of leprosy

.Islands, it is impossible not
to belicAre that it is f a con
tagious character j for scarcely-
forty years have passed
since the first rumor was
hinted of its presence there.

ailment. Past experience
having proved that it could
be eradicated among Cauca
sian races by a stringent
system of separating the sick
from the Avell, affords good
ground for hoping that a
similar result can be arrived
at in the Islands. Of one
thing I feel assured, that no
Avell-fed and cleanly Cauca
sian need fear that he Avill
contract the disease either
during a visit or during a
residence upon the Islands ;
and you knoAV that this
opinion must be an honest
one and the result of convic
tion, as I neither reside there
nor have the slightest pecun
iary or personal interest in
the future of that country."
