Every one knows the cus
tomer who falls in during the
busiest hour of the day, edges
his way to a front place, gets
the attention of the salesman
by a loudly-uttered, "Say,
boss, will yez give me a clay
pipe. 1 dales here for me
backer." He gets a pipe
with the mystic "T. D." in
scribed on the bowl, and goes
off happy, but not so happy
as the dealer is to get rid of
him. One Kearny-street
dealer avers that the cabalistic
letters "T. D." stand for
"terriers' delic-ht," but as he
is a member of an
lodge and inveighs
Orange
against
the Land League in and out
of season, it is fair to assume
that he does not speak the
truth.
KNOWS WHAT HE WANTS-
Another customer is the
man who knows what he
wants, is well up on values,
and proposes to get what he
seeks. It is safe to say that
this gentleman gets for eight-
een cents as
good a cigar as
anv man wants to smoke.
Perhaps he only pays a bit
for a smoke, but he is sure to
have his money's worth, and
equally certain to be served
with a smokable article. In
talking with a large retail
dealer, the other day, an
Alia reporter received
several hints on the
business. Said this
cigar
gentle-
man, "The most costly bit
cigar we sell is the imported
Garcia, and among smokers
who know a good article the
brand has a very large run.
But it is well to be careful in
buying Garcias. The firm
puts up a second quality of
the brand. These arc culls ;
the broken, patched wrappers
and badly rolled cigars. The
filler is as good as the first
quality, but they don't smoke
well, and as for local imita
tions there are thousands of
them. Nearly every factory
in town imitates the Garcia
label, but a glance at the
Custom House stamps on the
box reveal the fact that they
are domestic goods. Some of
them are fair cigars, but they
are not worth within five cents
as much as the imported
goods. The best of the cheap
imported cigars is
TUB M AXILLA.
They are worth ten cents,
and most of them are made
in China. More than half the
so-called Manillas sold here
are domestic imitations. One
can tell them by the way the
wrapper is put on. The genu
ine goods have a wrapper laid
lengthwise. The imitations
made here are rolled around
and around, diagonally. Some
people fancy that a cigar
having light spots on the
wrapper is sure to be good,
Those spots are the marks of
the tobacco worm, and it is
supposed that the worm only
attacks the best leaves. There
is a good "deal of humbug
about cigar smoking. I have
heard that no one can tell
-whether ho is smoking or not,
unless lie can see the smoke
ox the light on the cigar. I
know (hat I have been deceived
myself in trying to know
which of two cigars was
lighlde, after I ws blind
folded. Of course, one can
tell by inhaling the smoke,
but 1 really think one can
draw as much llavor through
unlighled cigars as through a
burning one. The laste of the
tobacco in the mouth makes
the saliva How, the same as
chewing tobacco.
Talking to another dealer
about his customers, the re
porter received the informa
tion that the hardest people
to do business with were the
men who were afraid to say
they wanted a live-cent cigar,
and force a salesman to show
them half his stock before
they could select a nickel do
mestic. He found the same
class of people among tobacco
buyers. Some of them would
look through box after box,
and wind up by taking a
plug from the same box they
had used for months past.

To the traveler who has
visited the Escurial near
Madrid and looked upon the
massive crypt containing the
royal dust of Charles the
Fifth and Philip the Second
of Spain, there is a curious
similitude between the influ
ences of
feeling
engendered
thcre'and those arising in the
mind of the stranger within
the quaint and solemn struc
ture, the mausoleum of the
kings and queens of ocean
bound Hawaii. The first of
the 'Kamehamehas (the is-laiid-iNTapolcon)
is not en
tombed among the shadows
oi that strangely barbaric
(rather than, in any sense,
savage) sepulchre on the
beautiful, billow-beaten shores
of bland Oahu.
I have often thought that,
when the foreign voyager
first set foot upon those grand
old heathen islands of the
Pacific, perhaps another feel
ing than one of pride and sa
tisfaction at the boasted civi
lization of Christendom may
have filled or stirred his bo
som. What must he have
found in that balmy, restful
haven hi the depths o the
tranquil waters, so far away
from the vain, harsh world?
Certainly he felt the fresh,
sweet breath of a mild and
grateful climate. Certainly
he saw, on looking up, a
white-clouded, azure slcy, a
richer, mellower vault of
Heaven than he had ever seen
in the frowning Atlantic.
Certainly among the Sand
wich Islands he beheld a
lovely landscape of moun
tain, meadow, coral-coast and
reef. Certainly he experi
enced the quiet calm of mind
incident and inherent to a
scene of earthly beauty un
surpassed beneath the stars.
What, then, was there pos
sibly to mar the security and
simplicity of the pastoral pic
ture but the presence of hos
tile humanity or the scarcity
of needful food? Was either
one of these misfortunes then
imminent and impending?
There were fish enough in
the sea and the natives easily
caught them by the means of
a hook of bone and a line of
dried grass, the sinews of
birds or the fibres of plants.
There were cocoanuts on a
thousand palms and dates to
supply the wants of appetite.
There were bread-fruit,
guavas, bananas, oranges,
mangoes, yams and a dozen
other varieties of food suffi
cient foi the uses of a conti
nent. There was the nutritious
