From Ihc Itcpublic tih IV CONTINUr.l) l'llOM YUSTKHOAY. uiul jmlnlnbli- two, or Iculo, from which was inn do the fnvoriU nnd universal poi, half an aero of which potato likc root will millice to sustain a score of families for a year. There were edible birds by the hundred on branch and bush, and several kinds of sen-wood yrow near the beach inside the coralreefs which to day are an acceptable dish as salad or jelly to the native lishorinnn mid rustics of the islands. The conditions of sustenance being, then, favor able to life and health, was the nature of the islanders unfavorable to either, or to human happiness? Let us see ! AVhon Captain Cook acci dentally ran across this iso lated group of islands, a little more than a hundred years ago, lie found them, he states, peopled with some four hundred thousand souls ; a gentle, lender, dark-eyed, brown and shapely race, tall and handsome, in appearance not; unlike Andalusians or amiable Mexicans, although of the Malay family. Those ancient children of the sea and the sun received the crafty captain with the will ing bestowal of all the hospi tality they had to oilier, and were even anxious to show this strange, so.a-inonstor all the respect and honor due a deity, so that he complacent ly assures us that they mis took him for a god, until he undeceived them by the com mission of (he very mortal crimes of extortion, murder and seduction. Then they at once recognized in this brutal Yorkshire mariner a man and a rascal. But his servile fol lowers had emulated his wor thy example, and the simple, yielding islanders of Hawaii were hopelessly and fatally infected with a vile disease, which before, with their pure habits of cleanliness, was utterly unknown amongtheni. Fortunately, Uook was killed while ruthlessly raiding and looting these primitive, un suspecting people, and his ships and fellow-pirates wore driven off, leaving, however, the seeds of disease and death behind them as a blessed reminder of the English sniloi visit to their thitherto happy and wholesome shores. To lie sure, they worshiped idols, but thereafter their blind idolatry of the white man and his interesting ways of thought and life were gone forever. 1001, harmless, in nocent islanders ! They had asked lor enlightenment and they had received destruction. To them the mythic apple of Hlvu had turned to dead sea fruit. Then they wore loft severely alone, to think over the benefactions of British eivili'.ation, until about the year 1820, when America suddenly took them in tow and eon verted them to Christ ianity, A good deal has been spoken and written about the missionaries having made the sweating and swimming sons and daughters of the still Pacific wear store-clothes, but doubtless with malice prepense. Old, rusty, bluek broadcloth, even at its shab biest stage of usefulness, does not kill or make ill the wearer. It was not the seeoiul-lumd clothing put on their hacks by JSTow Jjnglaiul penny-eon- tributioiiH which destroyed this amphibious people, but probably the unreasonable fact of their wearing this respectable, enst-off apparel both when in bathing and sitting at mipper 'wet. This practice accounts for the chills, coughs and consumptions which enine in to the Sand wich Islands about the period of the advent of the mission ary and I ho mosquito among hem. But must religions be assailed for this ignorant and injurious application of black broadcloth? By no manner of means. The light-hearted natives were by nature inclined to Annininnisni. They were free-and-easy of life, not hav ing to earn their broad by excessive toil and sweat of brow on account of their few wants and many spontaneous supplies, and consequently had a bad habit of enjoying themselves (none of them dying of hunger) in the pre sent, without taking much thought for food or raiment or the painful accumulation of a million dollars within the scant span, for the purpose, of three score years and ton? "Now, when Calvinism came in among them all this was changed most properly. Dan- eing, divine, singmg, swimming, sleeping wore seen to have. been frivolous, of course. Their eyes were opened to the folly and levity of their ways. .Earth became closed as 1 Tea ven was laid bare be fore their eager gaze. To bo sure, they began to die of stagnation and the blues (affections unknown to other countries) and grew so do pressed in body, and despond ent of mind that they would thankfully lie down and die of such trilles as mumps and measles and even influenza, glad to be rid, on any teams, of the unbearable burden of Adamite accountability, eter nal predestination and fore ordination, and the terrors of perpetual punishment in a raging pit worse than the molten crater of Kilauea, with no pitying .Pole whom to propitiate with slaughtered swine in the forlorn hope of obtaining divine mercy and compassion. What other in- lluences had their will upon the gay and thoughtless natures of these happy islanders 1 cannot vouch to to say ; 1 only know that they voluntarily burned or broke to pieces their various idols of wood and stone and accepted "New England theo logy all at once. But 1 1 horoughly honor the do voted, honest-hearted, whole souled American missionaries who gave their lives, their ef forts, their earthly ties and affections, their comfort and themselves to point the warn ing hand to what they believed in that age of stern, unyielding puritauism to be the only' road to happiness and Heaven, that by the ascetic mental scourge, the hermit-life in crowded places, the suffering and self abasement of the sinner un certain of salvation, the crown of blood-stained thorns once worn by Christ himself. ISor -would I for the world belittle these good, nay, holy men, it seems to me mistaken hi their zeal and sense of duty. The same Creator made the fruits and ilowers. as well as the barren lava-bod of the volcano. The heart craves love and joy and hope and beauty and happy day-dreams and bright scenes, 'as much as the head does success, dis tinction, riches, power, great ness and glory. However this may be, the fact remains and stares us solemnly in the face, that before our modern appliances of life, with all the unselfish, to w efjuceia. iiiMjiiiiiiniriui.uwiiiiMBBaMWBiMMwnaaBBBtBaB Ring up Tolopliono No. 202. 1 V YOU WANTn"ciieup Job done tl X nny pnilof the Oily or Suburb.
