What 1 Saw and Heard
in Honolulu.
11 Y DAVID GRAHAM ADEE.
From the Republic,

Qisinclination to manifest
vulgar haste or too great an
interest in progression. The
lower orders preserve some
thing of the same mighty and
serene'manner, less cultivated
and more moderate of tone,
after their own becoming,
homely fashion. The fisher
man in his cent malo has a
possessed, East-Indian sort
of air as he nimbly sculls his
dug-out or dives in the rush
ing surf ; the peasant in white
shirt, blue breclcs and red
scarf, with white lais hung
over his breast and bright
leaves in his hat, has the im
posing port of a newly-appointed
municipal policeman ;
while the women of the
humbler class,
wcarnic-
the
2a-u or petticoat, strut and
sweep along the smooth roads
or stroll on the crested shore,
' - their wild hair blown back by
the light winds of the moun
tain (maulca) side of the
sunny island. The Hawaiian
is a free man and he know
it, and he bears a high front,
';' an air of lordly indifferent
$' extremely impressive and not
at all displeasing. By birth
' he is a grand-seignor of
creation, and he does not
mean by any mere accident
to be mistaken for its lackey
and he is right. Such an
independent stock produces
independent . individuals of
very independent character,
indeed, and Prince Lunalilo
was certainly one of these
by nature gentle, generous,
courteous, modest, yet manly,
gentlemanly and chivalrous ;
a fine, pure specimen of the
genuine Sandwich Islander.
Aristocratic of character, yet
was he most democratic in
conduct a scion of chief
tainly nobility, yet was he
from his youth , onward a
staunch friend of his people
a titled commoner of the
ancient school. His line was
not that of the old warlike
Kamehamehas, those brave
Hannibo-is of the Pacific who
sc long had dominated the
islands ; their throne the sea
shell strand; their crown a
Grecian crest of golden plum
age j their sceptre a Canute
wand with which to wave
back the surrounding waste
of waters from further en
croachment on the green
meads of their lovely island
v home ; their kingdom the broad
group of ITawaii-nei.
Lunalilo, like Kalakaua,
was of the ancient race of
island chieftains, an alii or umi
of that long-cherished blue
blood so dear to the hearts of
the nation. Those high-chiefs
of Hawaii were a strange.
stupendous species specially
bred and kept for rulers and
to be as demi-gdds to the in
habitants. They dweltin grass
palaces ; dressed in the royal
yellow cloaks (more precious
than imperial purple in their
subjects' eyes) made of the
plumage of a small black bird
found on one of the islands,
under each wing of which grew
W a single golden feather which
was eagerly plucked and
devoted to that regal purpose ;
slept on thick white mats of
softest sea-birds' down ; dined
sumptuously off the mellow
est fruits and mealiest roots ;
drank luxuriously of It or
betel-brandy (natives old-rye
made by being chewed into
sweet pulp by the mouths of
maidens) ; spat their saliva
into round, hollow tree stumps
thickly studded with the front
teeth of their enemies ; sub
mitted themselves daily, or
hourly for aught I know, to
the comfortable process of
lomi-lomi (kneading the body)
in order to render pliable their
indolent muscles ; were floated
about in the salt surf by active
swimmers; flirted to their
souls' content with gentle,
smiling, brown-faced, dark
eyed island beauties ; day
dreamed to the dulcet music
of the native nose-flute, thrce
stringed banjo or shark-skin
tomtom ; angled by torch
light in canoes at night;
slumbered whenever drowsily
inclined ; were fanned at noon
tide with plumes of gayest
hue ; and reveled life away
generally in plcasantest pas
times or repose. Under this
indulgent process they natur
ally grew nmvieldy, huge,
obese ; but they transmitted
to their children magnificent
physiques, gigantic stature,
rude, robust health and the
opportunity aud capability of
unbounded happiness.
(What is Billy McGlorys'
ten-cent tipple to all this
tropical luxuriance of the idle
and ignorant old heathen
chiefs of the Sandwich Islands,
and what is our Caucasian
civilization worth, after all?)
Prince Bill, before he
reached the throne by popu
lar acclaim, was so great a
favorite with the natives that
they
it rvn'xm
him the title,
i" " ""v,
full from their hearts, of the
best beloved. He was fine,
tall, distinguished, aristocratic
islander, swart, slim and
shapely, sporting the mus
tache and eye-glass, and
having a humorous twinkle
in his handsome black eye,
which told of plenty of wit
and wholesale merriment
within. In the popular Amer
ican parlance of the day,
"William was a daisy. I am

or characteristic stories about
this jolly prince to the' genial
Scotch-Hawaiian, Colonel
George W. Macfarlane, that
elegant, talented young aide-de-camp
of King Kalakaua
and honorable member of the
privy council of Hawaii. It
may here be added of Prince
Bill that he was alwrrys a
zealous friend of the United
States.
Lunalilo was a representa
tive native, and consequently
an inordinate favorite with all
other natives and true patriots.
The populace idolized him
and swore by him devoutly.
On all occasions of public in
terest, from a circus to a
revolution, Prince Bill was
called for by the commonalty,
and always came. By right
of birth lie occupied a seat in
the House of Nobles, and
from it he would address the
chair so that the benches
could well hear whatever he
had to say. And generally
he spoke straight to the
point.
On one occasion an English
circus stopped at Honolulu
on its route from Australia
to the United States, in order
to give a few performances
before the next steamer should
come along. The tent was
pitched, the Hawaiian flag
was hoisted to the top, a
gilded box was arranged for
the king (then Kamehameha
the Fifth) and his royol
guests. 3STow, the then reign
ing monarch was Lunalilo' s
pet aversion, for reasons well
known at the time. The king
advocated -the claims of the
aristocrats, the foreign mer
chants, sugar-planters and
renegade adventurers from
our own prolific shores, while
the prince urged the rights
of his race and the interests
of the islands for supreme
recognition. In short, there
