TIIUltSDAY. APRIL 10; 1881
What I Saw and Heard
in Honolulu.
NY DAVID GRAHAM ADISE.
From the Ifcjmllic,
VL
COSTINUUU l'KOM YKSTKUDAY.
discerned the marked and
marvelous difference in the
refined natural aspect of the
always infinitely farther
advanced Sandwich Islanders
in respect to intelligence,
capability of improvement and
far higher
order of organiza-
tion.
As to the habit of tattooing
among them in the olden time,
I have no means of informa
tion at hand ; possibly they
practiced it for the purposes
of class-designation and the
ornamentation of their brown,
unclad bodies. As to paint
ing, however, it must be
remembered that these sea
girt islanders were perfectly
amphibious, accustomed to
breast the salt billows from
infancy, as much at home
upon the bosom of the deep
as dolphins and that the use
of paint upon their persons
must have been entirely
superogatoi y . Voluntarily,
however, they did destroy
atheir old and useless graven
images an leave and confess
themselves without a faith,
unbelievers in the superna
tural, skeptics, iconclasts, In
gersollians, or what you will,
who profess no credence in
' the unprovable of "Wendell
Phillips, the. unbelievable of
Theodore Parker and the un
knowable of Tmmanuel Kant.
If the first American mis
sionaries came doAvn so sud
denly upon the Sandwich
Islands as to surprise a lady
" in her bath, to catch a noble
ancestress of good Queen
Emma at her ablutions in the
surf, pray was it the fault of
the lady or the gentlemen?
3S"o, no, the oldfashioned is
landers, male and female,
were by no means so degraded
in life or morals as they were
made to appear for profitable
financial purposes, but only
a little peculiar of custom and
costume and unconverted,
that is all. They would have
been, doubtless, numerically
better off, patriotically better
off, light-heartedly better off,
and perhaps (the Kanakas, I
mean) pecuniarily better off,
if theyhadbeen providentially
allowed to remain undis
covered, uncivilized, un
Yankeeized, and especially
un-Californianized, if in some
other conventional respects
they have been somewhat im
proyed, amended and re
modeled to answer the radical
requirements of an
and adventurous
agressive
foreign
policy. But if Hawaii had
stayed uninfluenced of San
Francisco, then would she
have lost the rare advantages
derived from the valuable
v patronage of Colonel Glaus
Spreckels, that public-spirited
benefactor of the Sandwich
Islands.
T have been repeatedly
asked since my return home
if I had met Colonel Spreck
els, the champion of reci-
, procity, while at Honolulu,
and a good deal of natural
curiosity was exhibited to
know something of that cele
brated character derived from
personal' inspection of so re
. markable a man and the most
enterprising of merchants.
I had not the good fortune of
seeing Colonel Spreckels at
Honolulu, but it was my good
luck to spend an hour in
friendly conference with him
on New Year's Day at the
Palace Hotel when I had got
back to an Francisco on ray
way homo to "Washington.
Colonel Spreckels has done
everything for the islands, es
tablished sugar plantations
anu refineries among them;
instituted a fine line of
steamers, consisting of a
couple of vessels, the Alameda
and Mariposa, running be
tween San Francisco and
Honolulu ; inaugural ed a
branch bank in (ho island
capital, circulated his vast
wealth liberally among the
population and lavished count
less favors upon the govern
ment ; and last, but not least,
introduced the American
oysters into the Hawaiian
Islands. For this unques
tionable benefaction, I, as an
ardent lover of our national
Atlantic bivalve (for where
does it "grow to perfection
any where else in this
wide, wide world than in
America and on the Atlantic
coast?), respect and honor
TO BU COXI'INUtU.
