What I Saw and Heard
in Honolulu.
BY DAVID GRAHAM ADEE.
B'om the Republic.
' VII.
CONTINUED FKOM YC9TK11UAY.
He is about forty years of age,
well educated, of literary tastes
and considerable mental
s ability, both natural and ac
quired. Second, Kuth Iveln
okalani ; she is half-sister to
his late Majesty, and inherits
his property. . . . Third,
Colonel David Kalakaua, a
chief who is descendant of
one of the former Kings of
Hawaii ; well educated, speaks
English well, of polished man
ners and bearing, and com
mandant of the royal guards
. . . . Fourth, Bernice
Paid 5 by descent of high rank ,
both on father and mother's
side ; finely educated and a
perfect lady (now Mrs. C. Til.
Bishop) .
"As all parties express a
desire to preserve the peace
during the canvass for election
of a new king, I feel confident
no disturbance will occur
wllcss the legislative assembly
should elect some one as sovereign
other than Prince William."
JTot a pleasant outlook for
all the other candidates, cer
tainly . In his next letter home,
Minister-resident Peirce adds
as follows :
"On the 28th of December
Colonel David Kalakaua, best
in rank, by birth, to Prince
"William, and a candidate for
election to the throne, issued'
an inflammatory appeal to the
people. The circular is com
posed in the ancient Hawaiian
dramatic style of language,
alludes to the influence of
foreigners over the govern
ment and closes with the battle-song
of Kamehameha, the
conqueror of the group."
Could this ardent appeal
have been the last cry for life
of Hawaiian nationality,and
was David Kalakaua a patriot
worthy of place beside the
heroic and martial Marco
Bozzaris? Were the little
Sandwich Islands, only half
regenerated and partly mod
ernized as yet, still aflame
with precisely the same sacred
fire of race that impelled to
doughty exploits ancient
Greece and led to Ther
mopylaj and Marathon ? Sec
retary Blaine ' has told to
the Hawaiian government;,
through Minister Comly, that
we will not tolerate any
foreign interference with our
little beneficiary, which we do
not want to deprive of sover
eignty ourselves, and will not
abide any other power on
earth, however aggressive,
exertain undue or improper
influence Avith ; but this was
never meant to cliide or silence
the voice of freedom on her
native shores, but .to insure
her perpetual exemption out
side molestation.
Prince Kalakaua, the last
to chant the battle-hymn of
the Kamehamehas, was born
November 16, 1836, of a long
line of Hawaiian lords, his
father being the high-chief
Kapaakea and his mother the
chief ess Keohokalole, and
was consequently thirty-six
years old when he entered the
field of regal competition,
lie was a gentleman of edu
cation and breeding; had
occupied the offices of mem
ber of the House of Nobles'
and postmaster general of
the kingdom ; and was a
prominent factor in Hawaiian
politics. His presence was
remarkably fine, his stature
large and commanding, his
countenance manly, suave
and intelligent, his conversa
tion fluent, his address easy
and graceful. Indeed, he
bore the lineaments of an is
land Othello, and his mien
was none the less dignified
and stately ; and in his veins
ran the brave old blood of the
warriors who had led the
impetuous advance of Ka
mehameha up the Nuuanu
Valley against the dauntless
but unfailing generalship of
Kalanikupule. "" To him the
traditions of his island-
country were as dear as those
of the Scotch or the Swiss to
them. Kamehameha he re
garded in the reverend light
in which the sonk and grand
sons of the Old Guardsmen
regard the memory of the
first Napoleon. His war
song, his battle-ilag, he con
sidered as sacred and emblem
atical of patriotism and as
inspiriting to its soul as do
the Germans their national
"Watch on the Rhine'; in
centive and encouraging to
warlike ardor and action.
What wonder, then, that on
the eve of that memorable
election for the crown recol
lection of his chiefly ancestry
the instincts of his island
birthright and the irresistible
impulses of innate patriotism,
perhaps, assum'ed complete
ascendency in his mind, im-
pelling him to circulate as a
note of warning to his beloved
people the rare old battle
hymn of Hawaii to which the
troops of the Conqueror had
marched and charged to signal
victory V Only a few frag
ments of Kalakaua' s earnest
appeal to his countrymen can
here be given on account of its
extreme length and our limited
space :
' cO, my people, my country
men from old, arise, this the
voice 1
"Ho, all ye tribes and
sections! Ho, mine own
ancient people, the people
who took hold and built up the
kingdom of the Kamehamehas
from the blow struck at the
water of Keomo to the final
union of the islands at the
sea-beach of Kuloloia, arise,
this is the voice!
"Ho, Maui of Kuimehena
the great ! Ho, Maui of Ka
malalawalu, of Kihapiilana
also ! Ho, Molokai, high or
Hina ! Ho, Lanai of Kaulu !
Ha, Kauai of Mano, of my
ancestors gone! Arise, turn
ye, here is the voice !
"Ho, kin of Keaweaheula,
of Kamceiamoku, of Kama-
nawa, they who met the hard
ships, the hunger, the weari
ness of the spear and the im
plements of war ! Our hlood
flowed and our bodies were
scarred in the building of this
house, and the securing of the
