, BAKER PASHA.
From Life.)
There arc two Englishmen
at present in Egypt whoso
gallant deeds have formed
the theme of many a tale of
British daring. One of these,
"Chinese" Gordon, is now
in the centre of an Arabian
desert, upon a duty which can
be designated as none other
than a 'self-sacrifice to every
opinion and experience that
he has gained by a prolonged
residence amidst the danger
ous tribes by whom he is now
surrounded. The other En
glishman, Baker Pasha, has
narrowly escaped being
pierced to death by Arab
horsemen, through attempt
ing, in an equally self-sacrificing
spirit, to carry out an
enterprise for the relief of a
beleagured garrison, with
means which were totally
inadequate to ensure success.
"Chinese" Gordon and
Baker Pasha are both engaged

upon a dangerous duty in the
same country. They stand
side by side, as it were, for
comparison by their admiring
countrymen. The career of
Gordon has recently formed
the subject of a lengthy bi
ography, written by his cousin.
The distinguished services
which Baker Pasha has
rendered to his own and to
other countries have yet to be
given detail'; and when they
are published it will be seen
that they are but little inferior
in interest to those of
"Chinese" Gordon.
A son of the late Mr.
Samuel Baker, of. Lyplatt
Park, Gloucestershire, he was
born in 1829, and entered the
British service as a cornet in
the Ceylon Bines iii 1848.
He was transferred to the
ioth Hussars in i852, and in
the same year passed from
that regiment to the 12th
Lancers. In this distinguished
corps he remained until 1856,
when he rejoined the 10th
Hussars as captain
In this
regiment he re-
mained until he was ' placed
.on half-pay as lieutenant
colonel. He was too excellent
and active a regimental officer
to remain long unemployed,
and he received the appoint
ment of Assistant Quartermaster-General
of Cavalry at
Aldershot, a post which he
held until 1875, attracting
the attention of the military
authorities of this and other
countries by his incessant
endeavours to improve the
condition of our cavalry. He
left this service for that of
the Sultan, to the regret of
every British officer who knew
his worth.
At this moment it is doubly
interesting to note that during
the period of his service under
the British Crown Colonel
'Valentine Baker went
through the Kaffir war of 1852
and 1853. He afterwards
served in the Crimea during
the Russian "War of 1854: and
1855, and was at the siege of
Sebastopol. lie commanded
the escort of the Commander-in-Chief
of the British forces
in the Crimea, and was present
at the desperate battle of the
Tchernaya ; was engaged in
the final assault upon the
defences of the city and for
tress of Sebastopol; received
a medal for the Kaffir war,
and another with one clasp
for the Crimean campaign
and siege of Sebastopol ; and
wears the Turkish Avar medal
for services rendered during
the siege.
The Sultan made General
Baker brigadier-general in the
Turkish army, and his abilities
soon found ample scope for
development in the war be
tween Russia and Turkey
which followed upon his entry
into the Turkish service. lie
was soon promoted to be
General of Division. During
the retreat of Suleiman Pasha'
and his army from the Schipka
Pass in the Balkans, the force
under Baker Pasha saved
Suleiman's main body from
being annihilated or compelled
to surrender. In fact, Baker's
able dispositions and de
termined front at a period of
extreme danger kept the
whole Russian anny at bay,
until Suleiman managed to
reach a position of security.
Valentine Baker thus saved
the Turkish empire from a
terrible millitary disaster.
For this the Sultan further
promoted him, and after the
war entrusted him with entire
organisation and command of
the gendarmerie and police
of the Ottoman empire.
After the battle of Tel-el-Kebir
and the dispersion of
the Egyptian forces by
"Wolseley , the Khedive offered
Baker the chief command of
the reorganised Egyptian
army. The offer was accepted,
and Baker arrived in Egypt
and assumed command. He
was deprived of this important
post on the demand of the
present Government, and
relegated to that of Chief of
the Gendarmerie of Egypt.
The entire destruction of.
Hicks Pasha and his little
army caused Baker to be once
more called upon to assist the
Government of Egypt at a
crisis. With his whole en ergies
devoted to the work, he en
deavoured to form a force
which could reachand relieve
the beleaguered garrison of
Sinkat, nobly left by the
British Government to be cut
to pieces in the endeavour to
escape ! The logic of events
has -proved how inadequate
were the means placed at
Baker's disposal for so dan
gerous a task. He escaped
capture by the enemy, and
probably ' an ignominious
death, by cutting his way
through a body of Arab spear
men who had got between
himself and the square which
his cowardly troops would
not form. His life has been
so far spared, andin anyf uture
operations for the regenera
tion of Egypt.Valentine Baker
must play a prominent part.
Among the curious vagaries
of fashion I know of none
much more comical than the
new " Kensington " position
for -the waltz. No longer,
in the words of Sheredan,
One hum! giasps hers, the other holds her
hip;
For so the law's laid down by Bai on Ti ip.
The object of the present
position appears to be to keep
the lady at the greatest pos
sible , distance from her
partner. If Joseph had ever
indulged in a waltz with
Potipher's wife I can imagine
that this is just the sort of at
titude he would have adopted.
Mr. Spurgeon, I remember,
was once graciously pleased to
express his approval of danc
ing, so long as people danced
only with partners of their
own sex. We have not quite
come to that, but really the
" Kensington"" is the next
thing to it. Life.
When people are robbed or
blackmailed in this city and
apply to the detectives, the
latter often warns them to
keep the matter from the
knowledge of the newspapers.
This is .bad advice, as exper
ience has repeatdly shown.
There is nothing like news
paper publicty to unearth
crime and run down criminals.
Advice of the kind spoken of
above is never given with a
good object; and should
never be taken. The best
thing anybody can do, who
has been subjected to wrong
or outraged is to take his
case to the newspapers. After
that he may take his case to
