EDUCATION BY TELEPHONE.
Under the above caption,
the Electrical Review tells us,
with great gravity, that at
the German Universities
Heidelberg, (r o 1 1 i n g e n ,
Bonn-on-the-Khine, and Ber
lin especially what may be
called .the usage, so tar as
lectures are "concerned, has
been for a number of students
to get together and ' appoint
one of their number a dele
gate to a certain lecture.
Sometimes a class would
choose delegates for a week.
In this way, instead of sixty
or seventy young men rush
ing to a lecture, two solitary
figures, the one the class del
egate, the other the professor,
would, at the ring of the bell,
wend their wav toward the
lecture-room. Thus, a pro
fessor suddenly looking up
from his notes, and not notic
ing the scantiness of his au
dience, was once known to
have began with "Gentle
men," and then the solitary
audience having coughed to
assert his individuality cor
rected himself, and began
again with "Sir." When
the lecture was finished, the
man deleg-ated to hear it
hurried back to the Stndcntcn
hieiy, where his classmates
gathered, and told them all
he had been able to gather of
the Herr Professor's lecture.
But this plan, though the
best devised up to the pre
sent time, had some serious
defects, and a new system
was sought which, on the
advent of the telephone, was
discovered and adopted.
The student is no longer
dependent on what a single
man may chance to hear of
a lecture. A man who has
been up all night at a ball,
though he be responsible to
sixty or a hundred oi his
mates, may go to sleep in the
middle of a lecture or doze
all through it. The dele
gate may indeed it has not
infrequently happened get
the incoherent utterances of
those he met at the midnight
supper mixed up with what
he heard the professor say
during his lucid moments,
and thus his classmates get
some extraordinary ideas of
the particular subje.ctof which
the lecture wao an elucidation.
But when every man of them
has a telephone to his ear,
and hears for himrelf every
word the Herr Professor ut
ters, all such things are im
possible. Again, the festi
vities of student life may
know no cessation from morn
till dewy eve, from eve till
twilight.
The keeper of this public
house to speak more partic
ularly, dudcntcnhieipc has
had his beer cellar connected
by telephone with the various
lecture rooms, and the
studious young men who are
his guests, are dutifully listen
ing to every word the Herr
Professor is saying. One of
the number, though he wants
some mpre beer, will not
hazard the loss of a single
word by putting aside the
instrument in order to ask for
the beverage. Instead of
doing this, he mutely waves
his mug aloft with one hand,
while he holds the telephone
faithfully to his ear with the
other, preferring to attraqt
the attention of the Kcllner to
his wants by means of various
contortions than break in by
rude exclamations upon one
of the well-rounded sentences
of the lecturer. Near by is
another student who has hit
upon the happy idea of listen
ing to a scientific discourse,
while at the same time pour
ing into the not unwilling
ear of the fair bar-maid a
somewhat liberal supply of
that saccharine but innu
tritions article known in the
idiom of our own Bowery as
"taffy." This is the very
apex of scientific accomplish
ment, this the very acme of
economy of time and labor.
And what is this thai these
young men are listening to
with such interest? Tt is a
lecture on Political Science,
and should you put your ear
to the telephone you would
hear frequent repetitions of
such pondrous phrases as
Freitndshafisocsigiingcn , Dille
tantcnaufdringlichfaiicn, Sladt-vcrordnctcnvcrsammlangcnAUcr-thumswissenschaften,
Kin dc r
bewahrungsansf alien. The effect
of such words on those not
accustomed to them Ameri
can and English students
has often been of a serious
nature, tinder the present
system, however, this is
changed; the patients that
is to say, the students take
in the lecture and beer at the,
same time, and are not likely
to be overpowered. The Review
thinks the idea so happily hit
upon by the German students
of being educated by tele
phone, has by no means been
thoroughly developed as yet.
