mitted suicide by shooting himself

Great concern .prevails on some
of the plantations in Hawaii, over
the appearance of "glanders." It
appears only amongst tho imported
stock, and, as in a number of cases
it has proved fatal, the loss threat
ened is of a very serious kind, and
it is not too. much to remark, that
unless stringent measures are taken
and competent inspectors provided,
this disease may assume the pro
portions of a national disaster.

dent Simmons in the chair. There
was a full attendance of members

mittees, the election of officers took
place with the following result:

tenant, J. II. Fisher ; Second Lieu
tenant, G . H. McLeod ; Secretary,
E. Maybe ; Treasurer, James Sim
mons. The election of committees
was postponed until next meeting.
Messrs. Fisher, Aldrich and McLeod
were appointed a committee to secure
a temporary drill hall. The com
pany will hereafter have regular
weekly drills every Tuesday evening.
AN EXPRESS DRIVER IN TROUBLE.
The following case came off yes
Clarke, an express driver, was
hired by a man called Frank Davis
to take him and another man out to
"Waikiki. Whilst on their vay out,
Davis and Williams, the two occu
pants, said in native, which they
supposed he did not understand,
that they wanted to get him out in
the dark and hold him. On hearing
this Clarke pulled up at Dodd's bath
house and refused to go further.
An altercation ensued after which
"Williams got out and Davis started
to return promising to pay for both
when ho got back. On arriving at
Punahou street Clarke refused to go
further saying that his horse was
tired. Whereupon Clarke says that
Davis commenced to abuse him,
threatened to shoot him, and struck
him on the back of the head several
times. , A scutllo ensued during
which tho combatants got on the
ground, Clarke calling for tho police.
Eventually he secured Davis's hat
and coat, Davis himself running
Davis'b story is substantially tho
same until the commencement of tho
row; where he Bays that Clarke
struck him with a knife, and shows
mnrks and cuts on his hand and log,
with corresponding cuts on his pants
as pi oof.
