A PHENOMENAL MAINE GIRL.
The antagonists of modern
advanced ('duration, if (hero ho any.
should have heard a little lecture
that a gentleman gave on the street
Wednesday morning. The question
Itad arisen as to the tendency of
modern advanced education to create
a disgust for manual labor. The
gentleman told an anecdote. A
young lady who is very well known
in Lowiston and Auburn and who
has has a liberal education in Amer
ica, a course of study in the German
schools and who lias since taught in
some of the leading schools of this
State and others, came home to her
father'" farm this .Summer. The
hours hung rather heavily. "Father,
your oflice needs shingling," says
she, one day. The next day the
shingles were on the spot and the
young lady proposed to have some
fun and combine it. in a legitimate
way. with solid work. She built
the stagings geometrically, ran the
lines after Euclid and shingled the
olllcc as neatly and expeditiously as
the village professor of shingling
himself could have done. She pulled
down the staging and erected it
again over the ell to the house and,
in spite of parental injunction,
shingled the ell and a sloping shed
attached. She practiced music for
pleasure in the meantime, however,
and read German for a pastime.
"Nothing," added the gentleman,
"would be. further from her own
inclination than notoriety." Lewis

owners of hats as they entered and
left the dining room a' medal was
presented him as being the "prem

""1 was for years the wondering
gaze of ignorant." said he in a pri

a mistake, if I had once seen the

two instantly, and the picture would
not pass out of my mind, however
many such might be there."
"Did it require no practice ! "
'Not any; I could always do it.
In fact, I could not help it. It made
me famous, and I have been spoken
of in Europe. Asia, and in parts of
