FK1DAY. MAY 10, 1884.
HAWAIIAN MEMORIES.
"King Kalalcaun,
like
Prince Lunalilo, was of the
ancient race of island-chieftains,
an alii or vmi of thai
long-cherished, blue-hlooded
line so dear to the hearts of
Ilawaiians. Those high-chiefs
of Hawaii were a strange,
stupendous species, seemingly
especially bred and set apart
for rulers and to he held as
demi-gods
by the islanders.
They dwelt
in wit lie and
wrack-thatched cottages ;
dressed in the royal yellow
cloaks (more precious than
robes of imperial purple in
their people's eyes) made of
the plumage of a small, black
bird the u or oo found only
on one of the islands, under
each wing of which grew a
single golden feather, which
was eagerly plucked and ap
propriated to that regal pur
pose ; slept on thick mats of
softest sea-birds' down ; dined
off the mellowest fruits and
mealiest roots in sumptuous
splendor ; drank liberally of
u or betel-brandy (native old
rye, made by being chewed
into sweet pulp in the mouths
of dusky maidens) ; spat their
saliva into round, holloAV
stumps, closely studded with
human teeth by way of orna
ment; submitted themselves
daily to the pleasant,
salubrious process of lomi-lomi
(kneading the body by the
hands of a young women) ,
in order to render pliable their
idle, over-burdened muscles ;
were pushed about in the luke
warm waves by active swim
mers ; flirted to their souls'
content with gentle com
pliant, olive-skinned, oriental
eyed native beauties; day
dreamed to the dulcet music
of the nose-flute three
stringed lute or shark-skin
fom-tom; angled by torchlight
in canoes at night; lounged
luxuriously whenever lazily
inclined (and that no seldom) ;
were fanned at noontide with
plumes of brilliant hue by
chosen serfs ; and, one may
safely say, reveled life away
cheerfully in a general round
of perpetual pastimes or rest
ful repose most gracefully.
Under this indolent and in
dulgent process, however
grateful, the lords of Hawaii
naturally grew unwieldy and
obese, though grand; trans
mitting to their patrician
posterity magnificent phy
siques, gigantic stature, rude,
robust health and the un
bounded capability (and op
portunity) of wholesome,
wholesale happiness in their
sensuous Eden in an animal
island-way. The enjoyment
of mundane delights was their
constant and only employ
ment. And to them belonged
the innocence oi
ignorance
in all its fulness, truly."
Adee's Hawaiian Papers.

Ponder
O Hawaiians!
the glory now
gono
When the sun shed its splendor in
blood from the zenith
And the era of Kamehanieha was born
'Mid the sheen that the battle-smoke
luridly sereencth !
II.
Oh! Pictuie the years when your kings
weieas gods
And the natives as happy as nature
intended
The ago of the idols, the chiefs and the
lords,
Of A-ait, kahili and kapa all blended.
III.
A chieftain of old was a monarch of
might
To bless or to blight with a beck of
his lingers
Who felt the wild bliss of to dizzy a
height,
Of honors which e'en to this hour
lightly linger,
A palace of withes was the scene of his
joyi
A yellow oo-robe the lleh mantle to
shield him,
With myriad mermaids his spirit to
cloy,
And mats of white down balmy sluin
Pf bers to yield him.
V.
The guava and mango, banana and
date
Clung close to his cote in the daintiest
clusters,
Their mellow fruit ripening early and
lato,
While "cpnlcil lmrt 1loomeil In

And reveries 1 cstful as winds sough

Ah! Fancier seiaphle in tropical lands
With perls of ocean pcail-ercsted to

IX.
Slow fanned by the plumage of fcea-gull
and swan
Eaith glided away in ti trance all
enchanting, And sips of '-nectar ecstatic began
A taste of Elysium before the trans

And the Southern Cross 'hind the

And the moon diaw a veil of the clouds

Far past arc the days of Hawaii's proud

When the bwoulofthelleio in triumph
was shaken,
And the trampel-toncd blare of Oahu's
loud fame
Biokc foith in a blast that the echoes
awaken.
