TUESDAY. MAY 20, 1884.
A WHITE MAN'S PARTY.
Atlanta, April 1. The now white
man's party, organized by tbe Re
publicans who have grown tired of
subordination to the negro, is de
veloping into n movement of con
siderable political importance. The
participation in this movement of
United State Marshal Longatrcot,
Jonathan Norcross, cx-Congrcssman
Freeman, and men of that character,
stamps it as a movement that will
make itself felt. An address issued
to-day says :
u These negroes thrust themselves
forward as a matter of right to the
leadership of tbe party, and, being
incompetent, they destroyed its
power for good. This action of
ignorant negroes placed them in a
ridiculous light. Assuming control
of the Republican party under Gov.
Bullock, it has gone .to the dogs year
by year. The Democratic press
shonld be held accountable for tbe
evil effects of educating the negro up
to the point of claming the leader
ship. "This is tbe white man's country,
and while men will control it. Any
negro who pushes himself to the
front is unwise, and any white man
man who urges him to it is an enemy
of his country. The negroes are
failures as voters as well as failures
The address then announces the
purpose of signers to be reorganiza
tion. It says :
"We have tried negroes for sixteen
years as party leaders and find them
totally inefficient. They arc not
reliable voters. They are incom
petent, as leaders and have no ca
pacity for organization. We can
never succeed as a party until we
have thrown off the incumbus- of
"There are numbers of counties in
this State in which the negroes out
number whites and count for nothing
at the ballot box. The whiskey
bottle or money has more influence
with them then political principle.
The first thing resorted to control a
negro's vote is the whiskey bottle.
If that does not succeed threats
accomplish the purpose."
A ciieekl.uk practice, says JAfe,
is ' undermining cmetcries of San
Francisco. The price of cadavers
having a d y a ri c e d steadily for
four ycarSjthc medical collcgeso
found a scarcity of good, reliable
subjects. The professors then club
bed together and hired a venal sex
ton to make midnight raid upon the
graveyards lining San Francisco's
favorite drive, and anticipate the
day o'f reckoning for a small consi
deration. Things ran smoothly
until last month, when an able-bodied
savant was buried. A burst of
thunder sound starlcd the citizens
the following nigtb ; there was patter
of buttons and coffin-nails upon
roofs far and wide, and the sexton's
wife awoke next morning to himhelf
a widow. It seems that the savant,
a coetor himself, had directed a
quantity of dynamite and fulmina
ting silver to be interred with him,
and the unsuspecting caterer to the
college was thus trapped. The
simple ingenuity and effectiveness of
the invention seems to have tickled
the San Franciscoans, and fhe ceme
teries arc now being honey-combed
with torpedoes and blasting-powder,
fuses and percussion-caps to such an
extent that the science of anatomy is
practically brought to an end
