THE AUSTRALIAN MAIL.
The Chamber of Commerce lias
appointed a committee to draft a
memorial to congress, praying for
the passing of the clause in the Ship
ping bill authorizing the Po'tinaster
(ieneral to make adequate payment
for the carriage of the United States
mails by sea. The Postmaster-General,
in his anual report to Congress,
enforced the importance of main
taining direct mail and steamship
communication with Australia and
New Zealand in the interest of
American commerce. The Pacific
Mail Company 'was paid 812.53:5.80
ocean postages during 1882 for car
rying.the American Mail to the Aus
tralian colonies, the latter being also
compelled to pay $113.1124,50 for
the transportation of their closed
mail accros1' the continent, plus
100.000 subsidy to the steamship
company. The New South Wales
Government last year lonewcd the
contract with the Pacific Mail Com
pany, conditionally, for two years,
stipulating, tha; it Miould withdraw
from it in November, 1R81, unless
Congrcs appropriated one-third of
the annual subsidy payable by the
Colonies to the company. It i to
Australian mail service that the.
memorial will be presented. 8. F.
WAGES IN AUSTRALIA.
The wages scale lias risen in many
occupations in Australia within a few
years past, especially in the skilled
brunches and for agricultural labor.

The working day in the case of many
trades does not exceed eight hours.
On Sunday afternoon a party con
sisting of a half white young man,
two half white women and three
native women went into the Nuuanu
cemetery, and deliberately robbed
the graves of flowers placed there by
friends. Nearly every lot in which
(lowers were planted, was entered,
and roses, geraniums and whatever
suited their fancy picked. Several
young ladies who had been decorat
ing the grave of a loved one, were
htanding close by when one of the
half white girls came up, pulled out
the flowers from the vase, selected'
two roses and threw tiie rest away.
To th'e remonstrances of the young
ladies the, only reply was ''mind

this nature have been frqqucnt of
