WRECK OF THE DANIEL STEINMANN.
The loss of life in the dis
astrous wreck of the Atlantic
steamer the Daniel Stcinmann
is not quite so great as was
at first announced, though
out of a hundred and twenty
nine persons on board only
eight were saved. Our cor
respondent at Halifax, !Nova
Scotia, in a telegram which
we publish this morning,
gives the captain's account of
disaster. So far as can be
gathered from this somewhat
cofused statment the wreck
was due primarily and chiefly
to the fact that he was steam
ing onwards in a fog in close
proximity to a dangnrous
coast. The captain says that
he was going "dead slow,"
but the movement was suffi
ciently rapid to drive the ves
sel on a fock, from whic she
rebounded to strike again.
The force of the second blow
might of course be due less
to the forward movement of
the stamer than to the rise
and fall of the vessel on the
waves. There is some con
flict of testimony in other
telegrams as to the state of
the weather at time the of
the wreck, one statement be
ing that people on Sambro
Island could see the vessel
before she struck, aud that
there was no fog. The At
lantic voyage is becoming so
much like a gigantic ferry,
such vast multitudes of peoplo
are always crossing, that the
week of a passenger stermer
with the loss of so tcitiblc a
proportion of those on board
will certainly be the subject
of the strictest investigation.
The German steamers have
much more unfortunate in
this respect that the English
lines, and it is difficult not to
suspect that in this melan
choly case there has been de
