about laws of hygiene now
adays, but here arc a few
simple rules for keeping
healthy that contain , more
substance than a. volume of
learned advice :
"Never begin a dinner with
Never sleep in . your over
shoes. Never ride a thin horse
Never walk fifteen miles
.Never carry a barrel of po
tatoes on your head.
Never put your feet in the
fire to warm them.
Never swallow, your food
before you chew it.
!Never jump out of the win
dow for a short-cut.
Never drink more than you
can carry comfortably.
Never give a tramp summer
clothing in the winter.
"Never jump more than ten
feet to catch a ferryboat.
Never leave the gas turned
on when you retire at night.
Never sit by a red-hot stove
with a sealskin cap or ulster
Never thrust your knife
more than half-way down
Never kick an infuriated
Bull-dog when you have slip
iNevcr let your clothes dry
on you when you are caught in
jSTever walk into a parlor at
a reception and put your feet
on the mantle-piece. It will

Majesty's navy has been is
sued as aParliamentary paper.
This shows that there are G2
armoured vessels, of which 7
are in course of building. Of
armoured ships there are 51
cruisers, 5 in course of build-
ing: 18 sloops: 30
sels, 6 of which are not yet
finished ; 29 gunboats, for
general service ; 5 gunboats,
for coastguard service : dO
gunboats, for coast defence ;
'6 torpedo vessels, of which
one is in course of construc
tion 5 tenders, for coast
guard service ; 7 surveying
vessels j 3 special service
ships ; 6 Imperial troopships ;
5 Indian troopships ; J store
ship ; 12 special service
steamers ; and 6 dispatch ves
vels, of 2 are in course of
construction ; making a grand
total of 283 ships. The ton
nage prosposed to be built in
1884-5 is to the extent of 16,
05.' in Her Majesty's deck
yards ; while 4,62:1- tons are
to be constructed by contract.

duration of life in Russia is

motality among infants is

cents die before they reach
their fifth year. Nearly 2,
000,000 children perish every
year. Of 8,000,000 boys, only
3,770, 000 attain the age of
military service that is to say,
their twenty-fifth year. 1,
000,000 are found, by reason
of shortness of stature and
weakness of body, unfit for
