The Honolulu Cricket Team have
sent a challenge to the man-of-war
ships for a match game. Both sides
can put very fair teams in the Held,
and we look forward to a very good
game. It is quite likely that Satur
day will be the day on which the
match will be played.
A vmty enjoyable garden party was
given by II. M. Queen Emma, at her
Waikiki residence on Tuesday after
noon to her friends. About 200
were present. The Royal Hawaiian
Band was in attendance, and a very
pleasant time was spent,
Br.TTi:n accommodations ought to
have been provided at Kapiolani

It was anything but pleasant stand

of the race meetings we have at
tended, a place was generally set
apart for reporters in close proxim

A curtain owner of racing stock,
some time since, after a little fuss
with one of the sporting fraternity,
advised his competitor to " sell his
horse and buy a bycicle." The
results of yesterday's racing revived
the memory of this piece of advice,
and suggested its more appropriate
application to the case of the then
writer himself. Several are of the
opinion that the old horse, " Mark
Twain," would have had it all his
own way had he been on the track
on the 11th instant, as heretofore,
he has on many oeassions, proved
his ability to beat the best time
made on that day, with a tight rein
and no whip or spur.
A shooting affray occurred at
Ilanamaulu, Kauai, last Saturday
night. About 12 o'clock a native
named Moikahi rode up to the house
of a man named Kuau, and called
out, that if he came out he would
shoot him. Kuau says that he
wanted to know whether Moikahi
was telling the truth, and so opened
the door and went out. He had his
curiosity satisfied, for as soon as he
appeared Moikahi fired with a pistol,
striking Kuau in the arm. The ball
struck the shoulder blade and
passed down the back, lodging at a
point about nine inches from the
point of entry. The ball was re
moved by Dr. Walters on Sunday
morning. The cause of the shoot
ing is not known; both men had
