LATEST FOREIGN NEWS.
In Winnipeg, Manitoba, John
McCormick, under sentence for
larceny, escaped and was recaptured.
Attorney-General Miller ordered two
dozen lashes, twelve of which were
given on October 20th, in the pre
sence of all the prisoners in the jail
yard. The strokes were laid on
with a cat-o'-ninc-tails on the prison
er's baro back, while the snow was
falling heavily. Salt water was
afterward applied to his fearfully
lacerated back. The citizens were
indignant over the barbarity, and
vented their wrath in burning the
Attorney-General in clllgy. Indeed,
had they been able to lay hands
upon him, ho stood a good chance
of personal chastisement.
Prince Albert of Prussia was tho
German court candidate for Duke
of Brunswick. His formidable rival
was the Duke of Cumberland, a
connection of the British royal
family. It would appear that the
claims of the latter were too strong to
bo got over. The Imperial part)'
was equal to tho occasion, however,
and kept the ofllco in the family by
dropping its candidate, abolishing
the title and making the Crown
Prince Regent of Brunswiok, to bo
succeeded, when ho becomes Em
peror of Germany, by his eldest son.
Horace Dcland, aged 18, com
mitted suicide on his father's farm,
Brooklleld, New Hampshire, by cre
mation, whilo ho was despondent
from disappointment in love. Ho
made a pilcf of dead wood and brush
in a clearing and bound himself
securely to it with chains, and then
set lire to it. When found his body
was burned beyond recognition, but
tho agony ho endured was evidenced
by tho appearance that ho had tried
to cut his throat with an old razor,
