CONSECRATION CEREMONIES.
Tho ceremony of consecrating the
new chapel and school house con
nected with St. Louis College was
performed yeffcrday forenoon. In
addition to the pupils of tho College,
about three handled, there were
many visitors prcs6nt, among whom
were tho French Commissioner and
lady, and Hon. Godfrey Rhodes.
While tho pupils and visitors were
filing in and out of tho building
several suitable selections wcio nicely
played by tho Collego Brass Band,
under the leadership of Mr. Michicls.
Tho ceremony of consecration wa3
performed by; the Bishop of Olba,
assisted by Fathers Lcnore, Sylves
ter, and Clemens, aud was solemn,
Impressive, and extremely interest
ing. Excellent vocal music was fur
nished by the pupils and their
teachers.
A brief but pointed address by
the Bishop was an interesting feature
of the exercises. He commanccd by
expressing gratitude that all obstacles
had been overcome and tho building
completed. Ho was deeply thankful
to tho devoted Brothers who had
come here to give their services for
the education of Hawaiian youth, to
the King and Legislature of tho
country for liberal pecuniary help,
and to friends for their kind and
active sympathy. Tho service was
explained to be of a twofoldiiature,
namely, the consecration of the
school and the consecration of the
church. One was consecrated to
education and the "other to religion.
The church was fo'r the devotional
exercises of the Brothers, who
needed much grace, charity,
patience, and perseverance for the
proper discharge of their important
work of training tho young. God
alone could bestow these needed
qualifications, and they must be
sought from Him by devotional exer
cises. All education which docs not
cmbraco the moral and religious
faculties is insufficient. It is tho
endeavor of St. Louis Collego to
train these faculties, and although
no pupil is forced to learn the
doctrines of the Catholic Church
against his will, we do all wo can to
make them good pcoplo and good
Christians, useful in this world and
blessed in tho next.

courtesy, .and wonder why other
