The Bishop of Exeter and others
have been declaiming against moder
ate drinking. It is high time to de
fine what moderate drinking is not.
It is not drinking in public houses ;
it is not drinking on the sly : it is not
drinking early in tho day ; it is not
drinking by itself at other than meal
times; it is not drinking to procure
sleep or relievo paiii. All men, and
especially all women, who do such
things, arc not moderate drinkers
and had better beware. A moderate
drinker takes a very limited quantity
once or at most twice a day with
food, such n quantity as docs not
make him stupid, or even sleepy,
sucli ns leaves him cool' ami unexcit-'
ed. The moderate drinker takes the
lightest forms of alcohol, and takes
even these with care. He knows1 the
nower of alcohol to produce disease,
and is on tho lookout for any indica
tion of liarip or excess. Wo do not
think it proved that such persons be
come drunkards. It is terrible,
however, to see how soon a drunkard
is nmdo by thoughtless drinking; aud
how complete is his physical destruc
tion often before he, or perhaps she,
comes under medical notice. Jaun
dice, or dioDsv. or albuminuria, or
delirium tremens, may have been
readied before friends, unwilling to
admit what they fear, will send for
the medical adviser and make a clean
breast of it. Alongside all Uic
tectotallsm that exists there Is still
an appalling amount of tippling
which docs not distinctly intoxicate,
but saturates tho principal organs
and destroys them more quickly than
an occasional dobauch. But, as we
have said, this is not moderate drink
ing it is mortal drinking. London
