A liKPOitT having been circulated
round town this noon that a riot had
taken place at tho leper hospital,
Kakaako, the Bulletin reporter
went out there to ascertain the truth
of the rumor. It appears that Dr.
Webb read "out his list of those who
are to be shipped this afternoon to
Molokai. Soon afterwards Waianac,
a big native and one of tho worst
cases in the place, finding ho had
to go, got a large, heavy whip and
with four other meu stood at the
gate and said no person should enter
or go out. Hollister's wagon drove
up with a quantity of medicine, but
could not get in. The police were
telephoned for and arriving shortly
afterwards, Waianae was locked up.
lie soon quieted down and is now as
inook as a lamb. When lepers .arc
shipped away there is always such a
trouble. Dr. Webb remained there
all the time, not being in the least
afraid of himself, but more for the
sisters' sake. Wc accompanied Dr.
Webb through tho buildings, and
saw some very bad cases. Tho poor
lepers looked very glad to sec the
doctor and he had a kind word for
all, which cheered them up. He is
very much thought of by the poor
patients. About forty will be
shipped this afternoon by the Moko
lii. The greater portion of them
appear to bo glad to go.
A DEBATING SOCIETY.
Editor Bulletin: An organiza
tion of the kind suggested iu your
yesterday's editorial notes appears
to be an absolute necessity in this
community, if it is to keep pace with
the spirit of tho times. Questions
of local and universal interest arc
continually forcing themselves upon
tho minds of thinking people, and
there seems to bo no opportunity
hero to ventllato them. As anxious
as the press may be, to fill that
vacuum, such questions arc generally
of a more or less progressive ten
dency, apt to incur tho displeasure
and involve tho loss of patrons.
Hard as it may seem, to suppress
advanced ideas, the local journals
which from principle- would bo most
progressive are unfortunately not in
n financial position to defy public
prejudices. An organization ns sug
gested would at once meet the want
and also be a support to any journal
sympathizing with it, ro ns to result
In mutual benefit. But by far tho
greatest advantage accruing there
from would consist in the attraction
of tho thinking and progressive
element who would rcgaid such nn
organization as at least one object
worth staying for in a country which
outside of Its climatic advantages
offers so little worth making it one's
The wi iter is of tho opinion, sir,
that a call in your valuable paper for
a meeting in soino public hall on
some evening for the purpose of
effecting such an organization would
be much appicciatcd and responded
to by a goodly number of people
who nic feeling that want.
LETTER MOM MR. WISEMAN.
Editor Bulletin : Some of my
business friends are vexed at the
covert slur attempted to be cast
upon me by the JmraiUtn, under
the thin guise of an interview with
a fresh competitor in lny line of
business. The ailiclc in question
represents Mr. Palmer, who is only
a very new beginner, as being the
"leading" business agent and the
best authority upon real estate
matters in tho city. That was in
tended to have been very severe
upon your humble servant, who
appeals with confidence to a record
of six years in the business, with
probably more houses and city
property in keeping than all the rest
of .the agents put together, and my
collection department including all
the principal business houses of the
city. The gentleman who is placed
by that paper in the "leading"
position (whether willingly or not)
may well say, "Save me from my
friends!" for they simply set him
up as the jackdaw masquerading in
the borrowed tail feathers of the1
peacock. Your contemporary doubt
less pleases itself, and hurts no one
but the man it takes under its wing,
in this method of getting even in a
personal difference between its
manager and myself. The under
signed is content with the greater
part of the business in his line the
city affords, and is not a bit envious
of the regard of those ready to ac
cept as the " highest authority " in
real estate matters a tyro of two or
three months' experience.
