A SKILFUL SURGICAL OPERATION.
Tho American Ambassador at Vlentri,
Mr. Kasson, hits lately forwarded lo his
Government an interesting account of a
icmarkablo surgical operation lately
pes formed by Piofessor Ulllroth, of
Vienna, which, wonderful to tell, con
sisted in the removal of a portion
of the human stomach, involving
nearly oiic-lhiid of the organ and,
strange to say, the patient lecoverccl
the only bUtccssful operation of- the
kind ever performed. The disease for
which this operation was pcrfoimcd
was cancer of the stomach, attended with
the following symptoms: The appetite
is quite poor. There is a peculiar hides,

morninc;, accompanied by an unpleasant
taste, i'ood fails lo satisfy this peculiar
faint sensation ; but, ou tho contrary, it
appears to aggravate ihc feeling. Tho
ejes arc suuElh, tinged with yellow; the
hands and feet become cold and sticky
a cold perspiration. The sufferers leel
tired all the nine, and sleep does not
seem lo give rest. After a lime the pa
tient becomes nervous and writable,
gloomy, his mind tilled with evil fore
bodings. When rising suddenly from
a rccumbjnt position tl'icic is a dizziness,
a whistling sensation, and he is obliged
to grasp something Him lo keep from
falling. The bowels costive, the skin
dry aud hot at limes; the Wood becom
ing thick and stagnant, and doc3 not
circulate properly. After a timo the
patient spits up food soon after eating,
sometimes in a sour and fermented con
dition, sometimes sweetish to the taste.
Oftentimes theic is a palpitation of the
heiit, and the patient fenis be may have
lieait disease. Towauls the last the
patient is unable lo ictnin any fool
whatever, as the opening in tho intes
I hies becomes closed, or nearly so. Al
