WHAT IS THIS DISEASE THAT IS
COMING UPON US?
Like a thief at night it steals in upon
us unawares. Many persons have pains
about the chest and sides, and sometimes
In the back. They feel dull and sleepy ;
the mouth has a bad taste, especially in
in tho mornlne;. A sort of sticky slime
collects about tho teeth. Thcappctito is
poor. There is a feeling like a heavy
load on tho stomach; sometimes a faint
all.gouo sensation at the pit of tho
stomach which food does not satisfy.
Tho eyes arc sunken, the hands and feet
become cold nnd feel clammy. After a
while a cough acts in at first dry, but
after a few months it is attended with u
greenish coloured expectoration. The
ntllictcd one feels tired all the while, and
sleep does not seem to afford any rest.
After a time ho becomes nervous, irrita
ble, and gloomy, and has evil fore
bodings. Thcro is a giddiness, a sort of
whirling sensation In tho head wlitli
rising up suddenly. The bowclo become
costive; tho skin is dry and hot at times;
tho blood becomes thick and stagnant;
the whites of tho eyes become tinged
with yellow, tho urine is scanty and hlgh
colourcd, depositing a sediment atter
staudlng. Thero is frequently a spitting
up of the food, sometimes with a sour
taste, nud sometimes with a sweetish
laste; this is frequently attended with
palpitation of tho heart; tho vision
becomes impaired with spots before the
eyes; there is a feeling of great prostra
tion and weakness. All of these symp
toms aro in turn present. It is thought
that nearly one-third of our population
has tli is disease in some of its varied
forms. It has been found that medical
men havo mistaken the nature ot tliU
disease. Some havo treated it for a liver
complaint, others for kidney disease, etc.,
but none of the various kinds of treat
ment havo been attended with success,
because tho remedy should bo such as to
act harmoniously upon each one of these
oigans, and upon tho stomach as well;
for in Dyspepsia (for this is really what
tho disease is) all of these organs partake
of this disease and require a remedy
that will act upon all at the same time.
