Manuel JNicols, a sailor on board
the Alameda, was found guilty of
impoiting forty tins of opium into
the Kingdom. This is the man who
passed the opium into a boat belong
ing to a friend of his who is now
serving his sentence over tho reef.
The latter testified against Nicols
and clearly proved the case. Nicols,
who is a Greek, said he knew noth
ing about such business and would
swear so by the Bible. However,
His Honor Justice Bickcrton thought
otherwise, and sentenced him to pay
a fine of S200 and be imprisoned at
hard labor for nine months.
Yr.STKitiuy afternoon, a large
number of people were present at
the New Central Park, corner of
Beretania and Punchbowl Streets,
to witness an exhibition of tho roller
coaster. It is quite a novelty in
this city, and consists of an inclosed
track running in a circular form,
and standing al an angle of about
15 degrees, ending at an up-grade
to stop the cars. The whole thing
is very strongly built and neatly
painted. Tho carriage is something
like a garden seat on wheels, and
about eight persons can rule com
fortably on one at a time. Quito a
number of prominent citizens and
members of the press tried this nov
elty and were much pleased with it.
Tho quickest trip round yesterday
was mado in 17 seconds. Workmen
are at present preparing the ground
below for a skating rink.
