WHAT WOMEN WANT.
A well-known physician, whoso
practice lies in the direction of the
fashionable tip-town avenues and is
largely among women, was talking
about health matters generally with
a reporter of the New York Mail
and Express the other day, when
the conversation turned upon the
ill-health of women as compared
with that of the sterner sex.
"The principal cause of woman's
ill-health," said the doctor, "is that
they ignore the old saying, 'Mem
sanain corporesano.' The major
ity of women who have passed their
twentieth year know next to nothing
about tho exertion of mind and
body. To begin with, woman is
moulded of finer clay than man, and
is, of courso, wore- susceptible to in
jury. Thoy do not observe- tho rules
of hygiene so uniformly ns men do."
"Explain matters a little more in
detail, doctor."
"Well, women do not cat, drink
or dress with reason. They nibble
too much. Their stomachs arc con
stantly at work. It is almost im
possible for that organ to secrete
any chyle-ythnt is, the juice which
acts as a dissolvent of the contents
of the stomach so long as that
organ is at work. Uy this too fre
quent eating a rational appetite is
spoiled. Only one thing then can
follow an impaired digestion and
dyspepsia.
"The greatest cause of the poor
health of American women, however,
is the lack of invigorating employ
ment. Thoy loll too much. The
brain and wholo muscular system
become sluggish and at hist incap
able of sustaining any brain at all.
The need of American women is not
doctors and medicines, but advice
and more out-of-door exrecise, more
useful employment in tho house and
more interchange of ideas and opin
ions. Woman, instead of being
man's inferior .and tho weaker of
tho two, is intended by nature to be
the greater and the stronger."
WOMAN'S PROCRESS.
There are twenty-seven women
students in McGill University, and
Adclbert College, Ohio, lias decided
in favor of co-education. Twelve
thousand women have voted in
Washington Territory, and one has
served as foreman of a jury. The
highest prize offered to English mu
sical students was won by a woman.
Two women arc painting a drop cur
tain for a Chicago theatre. In Swit
zerland women monopolize the tele
phone business, and in Valparaiso
they arc employed exclusively as
street-car conductors. A woman
holds the chair of the Doctor of
Mathematics in the Stockholm Uni
versity. Sixty women have matri
culated in tho Dublin University. A
young lady in Franklin has taken to
surveying with her father, and wo
men have taken out patents for a
broom and brush holder, a crib, a
meat tenderer, a compound for pre
serving flowers, aud a bent indicator
