POPULAR SCIENCE.
Dr. Klczko of Vicmia lias suggest
ed lliu U3o of petroleum or paralllnc
as a powerful preventive of cholera.
Investigations made by a commit
tee of the British Association show
than n man really grows in stature
.up to his fiftieth year, although the
growth is very slow after twenty.
Dr. K. .1. Jeffries holds that the
three primary colors are red, green
and violet; that blindness to violet
is rare, and that color blindness is
practically confined to red or green.
To restore the original qualitic
to steel which lias been burnt in the
forge, plunge the metal at a red
heat into a mixture of two parts of
Ditch, two parts ol train oil, one
part of tallow, and a small quantity
of common salt. Repeat the opera
tion two or three times. Excellent
results havo frequently been so ob
tained. Old frames can be cboni.cd in
tho following manner : Scrape the
old gilt off the frames, rub them
with a piece of sand paper, and thou
paint them well over with blade
varnish, or, if that is not be bad,
with Brunswick black. This comes
in bottles, and can bo. .bought at :i
saddler's or painter's tore. If one
coat is not enough wait till it is quite
dry and then add another. This
can be tried on odds and ends of
furniture and found effectual.
The following is a crimson slain
that is frcquonlly usedv for decora
tive woods for musical instruments:
Ground Brazil wood, one pound;
water, three quarts ; cochineal, half
an ounce ; boil the Brazil wood with
water an hour, rtrain, add the
cochineal, boil gently for half an
hour, when it will be fit for use.
This is first applied, and then the
varnish, consisting of rectified
spirits of wine, half a gallon, six
ounces of gum sandarac, three
ounces of gum mastic and half a
pint of turpentine varnish ; put the
above into a tin by the stove, fre
quently shaking till well dissolved ;
strain and keep for use. If it is
harder than is wished 'thin with
more turpentine varnish.
For testing gold, make a liquid
consisting of nitric acid, on a ounce ;
water, two drams; and mtfriatic
acid, one-half scruple. Mix the
ingredients well, and keep the solu
tion in a bottle with a glass stopper.
"With a glass lod which lias been
dipped in the mixture touch the
metal and watch tho action. If no
effect is produced on the metal it is
either gold or gold plated. If the
"gold" is very low or less, than nine
karat, the acid will boil green, and
base metal is at once detected by
the mark left by the acid. To test
silver, apply a drop of a solution of
nitric acid, three ounces ; water, one
ounco;and bichromate of potash,
one-half ounce, and wipe off the
drop immediately with a sponge and
water. If a blood-red mark results,
the metal is silver or the article is
silyer plated. .
Not that kind of a little girl "Aic
you a little French girl?" they asked
of a darkeyed miss who was tripping
across tho steamer's deck. "No,"
said she; "I'm a Methodist. '-'
A Kentucky gentleman tells of
a witty retort that was made by W.
S. Ilcssa, then an attache of tho
Louisville Couvier Journal to his
chief, the late George J). Prentice.
Thelntter came into the olllco one day
and said: "Have you read my last
poem, "Will?" "1 hope so, Mr. I'rcn
tlcc," said IIcss.
A Sunday school teacher asked a
little girl of her class if sho had been
baptized. "Yes," said the little
gill, 'two times," "Two times I
Why, how could that be?" exclaim
ed the teacher. "It didn't tako the
first lime," said tho little girl.
"I'm M"1 fashed wi a singing in
my head, John," said one mnnSto
another. "Do ye ken the icason o'
that?" asked tho other. "No."
"Weel, it's becauso it's empty,"
said John. "Aye, nion, that's
queer," said tho first one. "Are,
ye ne'er fashed wi' a llnging inyer

answered John. "An' do ye no ken
tho reason o that? It's because it's
