"Washington, Ma)' 7. Nesbit,
Chief Clerk of tho Department of
Agriculture, snj-s that of 3,000 let
ters received yesterday nt least one
fourth vrcre applications for silk
cocoons, mulberry lenves and in
formation about silk cultuic. "My
idea is," said Ncsbit, "that this
industry is destined to spring up
among the farm women all over the
country nnd give thorn that profita
ble employment -which they lost
years ago by tho introduction of
labor-saving machinery. The time
was when they could weave and spin
and chum, but now they arc virtu
ally out of employment. And I be
lieve silk culture is going to bo very
proper and 'ptofitnbic, as well as
pleasant. The tea-culture business
is a success only so far as growing
the plant is . concerned. I under
stand one tea farm in North Caro
lina is in splrndid condition ; but in
this country we cannot begin to
cure tea as they euro it in China or
Japan, not only because wo have no
cheap labor, but because the ele
ments do not seem propitious. Silk
culture is the coming industry of the
farmhouse." Ncsbit added that
there was yet a small supply of
cocoons at the department.
A clergyman preached a powerful
sermon against tho skating rink, de
claring that it was more harmful
than the gambling den. On the fol
lowing night the clergyman's son,
who had intended to visit the rink,
concluded, as a dutiful son should
have done, to obey his father, and
of the two evils choose the lesser.
He therefore went to the gambling
den and lost $800 which his father
had recently received from a dona
tion party. Puck.
