MATRIMONIAL.
1 came down in a car the other
evening says u writer in tho New
York rorldt with a lndy and her
husband who were going to the
theatre. Another wife and husband
snt just oppositd us. How did 1
know it was nnolhor husliand aud
wlfo'f Easily enough. AVo all knew
thoy wero husbaml and wife. .She
was young and pretty, well-dressed
and lonesome. Why lonesome?
Loncaomo because her husband read
the paper and said never a word to
her. My friend's w if c grew almost
frantic tit tho sight of it. "For
heaven's sake, George," bIic said,
"never treat mc that v;&y."
"How? Why, what do you
mean?"
"Oh, don't you sec?" she ex
claimed, as she hid her face in her
hands and leaned up against the big
sleeve of his overcoat, "don't you
spo he don't say a word to her. 1
should feci miserable if you were to
treat mc that way. I should actu
ally die of humiliation. What a
brute of a man it is that can ride all
the w ny down town w ith his w ife and
never betray the slightest evidence
that' die knows shcis in cxisten'o6.
Talk to me, George; do say some
thing. 1 will jump out of tho car
if you don't talk to. me. I would
not look like that poor woman for
anything in the world."
And thus and thus. Gcoigc got
up a smile a soit of foi ced hot
house smile but a smile and, said
something about the w cathcr. That
was better than nothing. It quieted
my lady somewhat and enabled her
to look upon-her lonesome neighbor
with a soit of commiserating con
descension. It was nbt clear that
the manied woman on the opposite
side would have anmccintcd the
sympathy of her. fair- sister oven if-
she had been awaic of it. Perhaps
she did not want to be talked to.
Perhaps 6hc and her husband had
had a heated argument before they
left home as to the last 'pair of shoes
she had cot, or as to the meiits of
the Watts collection at the Metro
politan Museum of Art. Peihaps
they were both cooling off. He
read the paper aud she looked out
of tho window. , When they got to
the street where they wanted to go,
he rose, and without lookingto one
side or the other said "Cdme on,"
and they walked out. No' people on
earth could be so matter, of fact ex
cept mauicd people.; Perhaps (he
was one of that class of men who
believed that marriage is the, end of
all gallantry whcthei to one woman
or another. Tlfcic arc men of that
kind. In fact, the world js full ,of
them. My friend's wife took the silent
Benedict on tho other side to be one
of that kind. If there is one thing
in the 'world that angeis a woman It
is neglect andlandiffcrericc. "Hell
hath no fury like a womaa'scorned.'
A woman neglected is next to a
woman scorned. , Therc'is nov perio'd
in a woman's life vvhen slio is', so
happy as when she is being courted.
That accounts for" -lie' fact that a
great many of them' permit them
selves to be courted by men who
have no light to, do 'such' a thing,
They like the gallantries of court
ship, the playful words of a suitor,
his constant 'animation, his hundreds
of small compliments, 'his readiness
and agility in extending his hand
whether it is needed or not, his in
spirational conversation, his self-
sacrifice and unvarying devotion.
Heavens, what is there that a man
will not do when he is in loye?
What else will drive him to such
lengths of brilliancy and, daring? It
is then ho becomes the cockbird,
puts on his most brilliant plumage,
struts about in his greatest glory
andircaches the most .beautiful, per
fectiQn of' his nature. (He writes
long loiters, spends.his inoney like a
prodigal, is ready to go here, there,
or anywhere, lain or shine, at the
beck and call of his fair mis
tress; wears his best clothes,
walks with the erectness and spring
ing elasticity of a trained athlete,
smiles on all mankind, ami is a being
much beyond and above the common
run of the race. All this lie is to
the woman to whom he is playing
the lover. She takes him for what
he seems to bo not for what hc is.
Perhaps he may tmn out to be what
he seems to be, perhaps not gone
lallynot. Most husbands aie dis
appointing to their wives because
they immediately af tor mafriage
collapse collapse into mere matter-of-fact,
plain everyday men, who
scpni to think about as lnu'ch of one
thing as another. My 'friend's wife
on the car took the man1 on4 the otho'r
side to be a husband of this kind, and
tliattswiiy falic grew neivous
and
apprehensive apd excited, Luckily
her husband was not of tho kind the
husband on tho other side was sup
posed to be. He always manages
to say a word now and then to ''Tils
wife when they are going anywhere,
if for no other reason, simply for
decency 's sake. I Ho is ai npptccia
tivc husband, and vyliilc he may
sometimes talk against the wiud,' ho
talks nevertheless. Ho is a wise
husband. Ho knows how to keep
peace in tho family.
